brand new OEM or are the replacement torx screws good enough?? I'm concerned the Replacments are slightly too short for positive hook up. I don't believe it was leaking before but it is impossible to tell with the main seal leaking so badly. Thoughts???

+1 interesting to know. I was going to order the torx replacement screws too. Where did you buy the torx one in the picture from?
 
That's interesting. It's likely fine because you likely have plenty of thread engagement but I would be curious to see if equal size were available. I'll check. I can get all kinds of crazy hardware.
 
I have them and ship (7) screws for $4.
Screws are stainless and Allen Head and from Fastenal.
Worked great on mine and countless others.
I ordered 100 when I bought them.
PM me if you want a set.
I make zero $ on them.

USE HEAT TO REMOVE THE OLD ONES. A Pencil torch is perfect.
Heat, PB Blaster, Impact, Heat, PB Blaster, Impact, Repeat and they will break free.
You have aluminum and steel therefore dissimilar metals therefore galvanic corrosion.

This is a 2 second check.
Drop the screw in the cover and see how much thread sticks out the back.
I think your fine as cover is mostly just the countersink.
If that gasket doesn't want to lay in the cover flat secure it with some Vaseline.
 
I'll get a picture of the screws in the cover when I get home. It really becomes a question of how much thread engagement you get. That will directly correlate with force/pressure applied by the fastener and also you need to be concerned with the screw backing out. If I reinstall the Torx fasteners I will use some blue Loctite on them...
 
I used the replacement torx from phh.com. They were slightly shorter but they worked perfectly.

I wouldn't use locktite on the screw though. They are already scary enough to remove without stripping. Later on down the road you might regret it.
 
At the time I replaced the oil pump gasket on my 80 I had the same concern, could not find Torx or Allen head screws that were the same length of the OEM screws, so installed new OEM screws. I used some Purple low strength thread locker on the threads (designed for screws 6mm diameter and under), which should also act as a thread sealer. AFAIK the Purple is strong enough so the screws shouldn't loosen up from vibration but not so strong that you can't remove them in the future. FWIW.

So four threads on the hex screws make it past the cover. Seven threads make it past the cover on the OEM fastener. @Hornd are the fasteners you're distributing the same length as the OEM? As of right now I'm going to go back to the OEM after seeing this.

5 or 7 threads? at this point your splitting hairs.
Your smashing an O-ring here, not torquing a Cylinder Head Bolt to the Modulus of Elasticity.

Allen or Torx are a better design for applying a lot of torque, but the way mine came out after 200,00 miles and 19 yrs, your fine to just go OEM and forget the loctite. Not one documented case of these vibrating free or even being loose.
I ordered my screws to OEM length, but did not check length. Hard to argue with leak free.

Just glad you didn't hit me with the Grade ie Tensile Strength, Rockwell Hardness, Tolerance, Surface Finish, or Surface Treatment ;)
