Is the OEM screw 14mm long?

I bet they are actually 12.7 mm long or 0.4999985 Inches.

the new oem ones I have are 13.6mm

I bought new OEM screws assuming I would destroy the originals removing them but all the old ones came out fine and I could have reused them as Tools mentions above. However, due to a bad case of LC OCD I installed the new OEM screws and kept the old ones for "spares".

Haha, I bought new ones just in case, but I'm trying to get it all done in 3 days so it's better to be prepared.
Wouldn't mind getting some Torx screws to keep future maintenance easier if it binds.

How often are you guys doing this? From what we are seeing it's maybe a once every 200K mile-ish deal? :meh:

Sure, if the screw comes out unbuggered then by all means reuse. But that's not always the case and when it happens it suuuucks.

Have done a ton of them, only remember drilling one or maybe two bolts? Wasn't a very big deal, drill the head off, remove the cover and unscrew the stub. I'm likely missing some essential element to add more drama?

I have done a bunch of covers and usually need to drill at least one head off. It's the heads of the screw that lock in, not the threads. My approach is to flush out the head with brake clean, drive in a #3 Phillips bit to help get full engagement and use a 14v cordless impact driver.

Last cover I broke a bit off in one of the screws.

I never reuse the old screws! Just Torx!

Prefer the ones made of 5/16" stock, they seem more solid, have larger spread. Hammer it solidly in, then knock it loose with an IR 3/8" dr impact.

Phillips head anything does not belong on an engine. When I saw those on the pump cover I laughed. Switching mine to torx.

I always thought the proper way to measure a bolt or screw is threaded length only, NOT INCLUDING the head length??

Well it depends. Screws/bolts need to be measured where their engagement is. For hex bolts you simply measure the threads because the face of the hex IS the engagement point. For countersunk you measure the entire length because the countersink head IS the engagement.
