Today Herman arrived. He is a 1973 Cygnus White FJ40. Get it? Herman. As in Melville. You know, the big white whale, Moby Dick?
Herman showed up late in the evening which is good since I am on nights so I can stay up late. After dinner I did some things and have some questions. First off, how do you post pictures and then type after them?
In the third picture the hose coming off the filter housing is plugged with a cork. I doubt this was OEM so where is it supposed to go?
Something in the first picture that was mounted to this random bracket?
During a previous respray they painted the radiator screen white. Just the two screws to get it out?
Then because it was midnight and I wanted to do something that I knew I couldn't screw up I took apart the original jack. Cleaned it all up. Now I just need to get grease and paint tomorrow to make it perfect. Thanks to Zags for his pictures and the inspiration.
Here are the pictures: (Gotta go buy a star!)

Lupa, my border collie, knows it's not a J**p. Because as I have learned every 40 needs a dog.
Other lessons learned tonight:

You can never have too many shop towels, wire brushes, work bench space, or wire wheels for the dremel.
There is not a whole lot better than working on YOUR 40 in the middle of the night with your dog sleeping on the garage floor. Reminder: Get dog bed for the garage.

This is awesome.:bounce:

Hurray!

After uploading , you attach pics individually to type between shots. Or you can seperate pics that have been attached all at once by moving cursor between

Awesome Chris, take good care of that thing!:crybaby:

Take some pictures a little further back in the engine bay to help orient us to what you are looking at. Those pictures are giving me vertigo...

I'll have more pictures tomorrow. Today was spent trying to replace the shower door...it didn't go well:bang:

My neighbor came over today and was looking at Herman and was asking "Where is the carpet and stuff?" I just laughed. He totally digs it though.

The downside of the shower door was offset by the box from CCOT. The :princess: was not really excited about the "calenders and posters" but she likes the 40s and asked if Herman was going to look like that one day...I asked if she was going to look like one of the models one day. :whoops: I quickly left for work :steer:

Here is to another night of making plans at work

NICE!
When I pick the posters for CCOT orders - I always look for ones WITHOUT women...and then I hand them over to my 11 yo daughter and pretend I got them just for her.

Cant wait to see more cruiser porn!

Engine picture

Here is a farther back picture. The close ups are in the first set of photos. The hose in question is at the 11 oclock position and is plugged with a cork. The random bracket is down at the 5 oclock position in the photo by the fan blade. So where does the hose go and what was supposed to be on the bracket? Thanks!

Herman Photos

I took Herman out for another quick spin today in the neighborhood. I also replaced the air filter because I had five minutes and wanted to get something done. I think on Monday is when I am going to replace all the fluids and the oil pan gasket. So here are some pictures of Herman in front of what is allegedly the second oldest Hickory Nut tree in NC.

Last week I got the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor replaced. I ran out of time before I could get to the fluids and the points. So this week my time off will be used replacing the fluids, points, and adjusting the brakes. And hopefully getting it registered so I can finally drive the 40 around town. If all that happens by Wednesday then it will be off to get a new exhaust and muffler put in. Yay!

Your bracket and hose was for emission items that are now gone. Smog pump was attached to the bracket by the fan and I believe the air injection rail was attached to the air cleaner housing. Mine was all removed o when I got it but that's about as much that I have found out so far.

Thanks for the information FluByU. I didn't realize they had emission controls back in 1973... I Don't think that will be a problem here in NC considering the vehicles age.

Still haven't gotten to the fluids yet. I did get it registered and insured though. Drove it down to the dealership and ordered some new windshield wiper blades. The thing is awesome!!!
Scheduled an appointment on my next day off (Monday) for the exhaust and muffler to be replaced. The guy asked me if I wanted a loud or quiet muffler. I said "Um, Loud?". So I can't wait to hear this...Then fluids, or shooting guns. Haven't decided yet. But at least I'm off night shift now...

When you change your fluids, make sure you can get the fill plug off before you go and drain the fluid out.

I always thought that the air pump (smog pump) was always located on the driver's side of the engine, mounted low. But maybe in '73 it was mounted on the passenger side? Interesting...

From personal experience and having a "Loud" muffler, I suggest you go with the quiet one. The 40 is loud enough with no carpet/sound deadening material, and since you have the hard top, the exhaust can really get amplified when rolling around the back of the enclosed space. If you plan on having any conversations in your rig, you might want to reconsider the loud option.
