'84 FJ60- I got all the bolts off, but this thing is really stuck. Any ideas on how to get it off without destroying the pan? I've already tried winching it from the skip-plate and rubber malleted the heck out of it. Crap

Place a bottle jack underneath the pan, jack it up just enough to put pressue on the pan. Leave it alone over night, lower jack, and it shoud come loose pretty easily. ;)

Thanks, but I'm pretty sure it is the original gasket on there and it appears as though someone put a ton of stop leak in the crank at one point, cause it has seeped out all around the rear of the pan. Would it help to take off the oil fill cap and dip-stick? Is there a suction effect because of that perhaps?

It certainly would not hurt to take the oil cap and dipstick off. Using the jack is baically to apply pressure to break the seal. I think it is more about how long the pan has been on, crud, and the like that practially glues the pan to the engine. I am not so sure it has anything to do with a vacum being created.

You can use a razor / knife to scrap around the gasket, where you can reach.

It will help break the seal, especially if the PO used some type of gasket adhesive.

X2 what Joe said. I use a long, narrow, thin putty knife with a sharp beveled edge to tap around the edge. Works like a charm. Once you get it started, it'll zip right off.

i too am partial to the putty knife method. the real fun starts once the pan is off...all that d*mn scraping to remove all of the old gasket material, (though you may get lucky and have it come off cleanly.)

Bottle jack and a 2x4 fromt he frame to the pan (sideways)

Slight press and ignore it for an hour. Then go back with a rubber mallet and tap it a couple of times.

It'll pop off.

Other than these...A BIGGER RUBBER MALLET!
Me, personally, I've always had luck with a painters tool.

Bash it with a hammer and you will deform the sealing surface or dent the hell out of the pan. Don't bash the skid plate cause you can break the welds and screw the pan up.

Bottle jack 2x4 against the frame and a little pressure and wait.

The engine is in and I have it on a lift. I still can not get it off. My friend and I have tried all the above suggestions. This thing is freakin glued on or something. I can't pry it off. I think at this point I am going to have to destroy the pan and get a new one from dealer. Any ideas on the best way to yank that sucker off once you decide it is going in the trash? Our first thought is to drill holes in the bottom rear and stick a small pipe through so we can get some serious down pressure on it. Any other replies would be greatly appreciated.

Huh. I've only seen one like this before, and the idiot had fixed the seal with JB Weld or 3m 5200 boat adhesive. Hope that isnt the case here.

There's gotta be some other way... have you tried using a plumbers torch to warm up the seals? Used with moderation it could warm them up enough to let them "give". Shouldnt take much either.

Other than that...a big screwdriver pounded into the seal to break it open, and twist.

A small porta power unit jammed around the frame/or somthing, but use a board on the pan side.

My dads 70 required this once.

Going to take another try at it tomorrow. I do have about 12" of the seal cracked on the right rear section. This thing is like nothing I could have imagined. Not sure why it won't come off. I'll try the torch and some pressure on the sides of the pan.. Thanks for the suggestions- I'll let you know how it goes.

I have used a chisel or similar tool to get them off before.......

be extremely cautious when using heat. don't need to eplode vapors inside the engine, you'll have more trouble than a stuck pan.

Yeah, if its now "cracked open" just keep working it...
 vs. :pig:

Not to be nasty but you have double checked all the bolts and nuts are off right?

All of the above. Large Mallet. Putty knife. Hammer and putty knife. Once you break the seal in one area, the rest will come easily.
