1989 fj62. Oil cooler was leaking and I’m on a trip with no tools or time nearby…had K&H imports in SoCal fix the leak. However now my pressure gauge goes straight to H when the engine is turned on. Tried cleaning the contacts, and the wire is connected properly.

Sender and the gauge were working perfectly before the leak fix.

One of the k&h guys had another sender but it’s the one with the ground tab. We tried that but when I turned on the engine the gauge didn’t move at all. It feels oddly coincidental that the whole setup was working perfectly and now it isn’t.

The only thing that looks different now is that they used an aftermarket oil filter. I have always used Toyota oem. Is it possible that the aftermarket filter could cause this?

I'm not sure I can be of help, but my gauge wasn't working of all because it wasn't connected. Then, I connected it and it worked great. After changing the battery, it now reads maxed out on high all the time.

There were no issues when it wasn't working and no issues now that it sits on H. I've chalked it up to 35 year old gauges and sensors.

If I had the same issue you had, I would rig up an external/aftermarket gauge and monitor it that way.

Have you ever tested your oil pressure with a mechanical gauge? Thinking about doing that next.
First swapping to an OEM filter, then I guess I'll start the diagnosis problem.

This is a bummer since I need to use the truck for a long trip from CA to UT!

I have not. But there are a bunch of posts on the forum about people who have.

engine turned on, does that mean the engine is running or just the key to on engine not running?

It means engine is running. When the key is just turned on, it doesn't rise at all. That indicates to me that maybe it's actually a real #.

I'm going to start with the easy thing and try a Toyota OEM filter. Will see if I can buy a new sender as well while I'm at the dealer. Then I'll go to an autozone or something and borrow one of their pressure testers. If it ends up being a good pressure range, I'll swap in the new sender.

Two questions:
1) What is the proper part # for the 3FE sender? I've seen a couple different part #s but some seem to be for 24v LCs
2) What the pitch / thread is of that connector?

Alright new oem filter and sender are on. I have the wire connected properly to the bronze nipple thing at the center and not to the grounding tab.

With the new part connected the gauge does nothing. With the old sender it goes all the way to H and sits there. Clearly the gauge is capable of moving.

Has anyone seen this before? Thoughts?
