I've searched all over the forum but haven't been able to find a thread covering this. My oil pan has paint flaking off in multiple places so I'm going to repaint it.

Oil pan from a 3FE on an 89 FJ62 if that matters.

Any thoughts on the "right way" to do it? Needs primer? Any recommended paint? Should I paint the inside as well or just strip that down to the bare steel?

Do NOT paint the inside, leave the inside alone. Just wipe it out with a rag and some brake cleaner.

Hit the outside with a wire wheel on a drill and then paint it. Did it on an old oil pan for my 1980 Toyota pickup and looked pretty good.

It can probably be done, but they're about $200 brand new from Toyota. Doesn't seem worth the risk of paint chips flaking off and jamming up the oil pump pickup screen.

I’ve repainted mine twice. It’s all about prep. Used BBQ grill paint the last time. Seems to have held up well. I do think I will replace the oil pan because I think it is leaking; either failed spot welds or threads for the drain plug. 40 years old now. Why not just replace it is my thinking.
