I have a '74 FJ40 with a F engine and 4 speed.

I have a leak on the rear of the engine and thought it was the Rear Main Seal, but after removing the transmission, and bell housing I have found that most of the leak is comming from the 24mm plug above the Rear Main Seal.

Is this a common leak point? Is that individual plug available?

Also does anyone have a drivers side transmission mount available?

Thank you,

Bob

are you looking for the mount off the bellhousing on the driverside? I've got one, where you located?

Bad call Trevor! I've seen two guys lose their motors when this plug went. The plug is available at the dealer and I STRONGLY RECOMMEND AGAINST AFTERMARKET when it comes to engine plugs.

That plug is the main galley plug for the entire engine, and carries full oil pump pressure.
If you already have access to it, definitely change it.

Mark thank you for the reply.

How do you remove the old plug?

Is there open space behind the plug?

Looks like I'm in for a good time tonight.

Thanks again.

You can either punch it with a needle nose punch or drill it. You must take EXTREME care to remove all metal shavings. As I said before, this is the main galley feed to the crank bearings, so whatever you miss goes straight into the heart of the engine.

Don't panic if you find that there is already sludge or metal behind the plug, this is normal.

Whoops...Sorry for the bad advice. I still wouldn't worry about it...F's are cheap. :D

Once you drill or punch the plug how do you get the whole plug out?

Sorry for being dense I'm just trying to see the big picture.

Thanks again for the reply.

Stick an awl, screwdriver or small prybar that you are sure will not easily break in half thru the hole and just pry it out.

Anyway to get to this plug without pulling the motor? Mine is dripping lots of oiil from this area, and I'm pretty sure it's not the valve cover.

Thanks -

Rocky

Bob, it is very similar to a freeze plug. Like Mark said, it should pry right out.

Rocky,
You don't have to pull the motor, but you will have to remove T/TC and bellhousing which means you will need to support the motor.

s***, Trevor is that the best you can do? If your avatar is a reflection of you? Go hookup with that Mace fellow and change your name to Butch!:grinpimp:

HTF do I get pulled into these things????

Do you really have to support the motor when you pull the transmission & transfer case? The FSM says to support the transmission and transfer assembly for removal (duh) but doesn't say anything about supporting the motor.

Those front motor mounts alone don't support that giant. If you have bellhousing mounts, then there is no need, otherwise you'll kill your motor mounts and possibly drop your motor> But there is only one way to find out for sure.
