I could not find any info on how long I can go between oil changes using synthetic oil (Mobil 1) I was planning on 8 thousand miles, with a filter change at 4 thousand and oil and filter a 8. Is this too long or just about right?

Thanks
George

The Blackstone reort I had said that I could go 8k or more with mobil 1 15-40.
Have never gone over 5k.

I use M1 and change my oil and filter at 4K...I am not interested in extending the intervals, just giving the rig TLC...

I start thinking about it around 4,000 and usually get it done by 5,000 on the vehicles that i run synthetic in.

I change at 5k miles intervals with the synthetics on all my vehicles - regardless of drive pattern.

Does anyone know what a FAQ is?

FAQ?

On a serious note to George, really read the FAQs on this. Cary, RavenTai, and others put a LOT of effort into it and Romer collected it all in one convienent spot. Check it out and then if you still have a question/clarification ask away.

IMO, the interval one can go depends a lot on your driving style and what your daily drive/commute is like. Do you drive 100 miles today mostly on the highway or 25 miles in stop and go traffic. Do you off road a lot or not at all. Etc. etc. etc.

And don't forget, if you do extend the interval you still need to occassionally check the oil level :D.

I've been doing approx. 9,000 miles between oil & filter changes with Rotella Synthetic 5W-40 and Wix small oil filter...the oil level was still full and appeared / smelled fine. What can I say...I'm cheap!

No really right or wrong answer here. With synthetic, it has more to do with driver mental comfort than oil performance. In my case, the bell goes off at 5K miles. It's easy to remember, comes up every 12 months or so, and I change it. That's with Mobil1 and Toyota filters. I'll bet that 10k intervals would be just fine, but that would exceed my internal comfort zone.

My other Land Cruisers get changed twice per year and I don't monitor the mileage. THat's with conventional oil (Chevron Supreme). probably 3k-5k. On my FJ60 I change out the 20w-50 just after I return from Surf and Turf, and change out the Rotella 5w-40 I run in the winter on or about April 15.

My take, is that in the long life of a Land Cruiser, the fact that you have an interval, and stick to it, is more important than what that interval is.

having travelled extensively overseas,.. i get a kick when ever I come back to the US and see people changing their oil at 3000 miles.

You won't see more severe driving than that in Europe where people can put 3000-4000 miles a year on their cars (daily driving stop and go for extremely short distances) or in Africa... and both these places, depending on coutry average 3-6 times our recommended intervals.

There are numerous studies online that you can find,.. one that I like in particular,.. and I'll try and find the link and post,.. that had a garage running M1 in a car for almost 20,000 miles,.. with regular lab tests... which showed that it was still usable at that mileage. I can't remember if they did filter changes or not.

For the most part,.. you're looking at losing the aditives in your oil,.. not the lubrication properties of the oils themselves... and these are replenished by the regular topping off that they did... lab proved it.

I've been changing my oil on my 4runner every 10k or so,.. and I currently have over 238k miles on my 4runner. My BMWs get changes at about 7500-10k if i get to it,.. and my 325iS has over 200k,.. and my M3 has 140... no issues on any of these.

YMMV but really,.. the US is one of the only countries to recommend 3k or so oil changes,.. and it's usually oil places that do that as most car manufacturers recommend higher,.. a lot higher.

Bill,

The site you're thinking of is bobistheoilguy.com I believe. To the question, the FAQ is an excellent one for oil. Ironically, I just pulled out my 97's log to check as we're going to put some miles on it next week. That Rotella Syn is really working out well and I will be picking up a couple gallon jugs at Wally World tomorrow.

BTW, here is a 15,000 mile oil change interval report from landtank taken from BITOG. For those concerned about running more than 5-7k on synthetic, you might want to reconsider given this excellent report with more than twice the mileage. From the TBN, he could have gone 20,000+. Here is the thread also:

First time poster and I'm doing so at a request from a member of a different forum.

I have a 1996 Land Cruiser with @ 190k on the clock. I bought this truck with 38k and have ran M1 since then. PepBoys had a calander with a 1/2 off coupon in it this year and I bought 20 calenders. I would typically do raids on pepboys and buy several cases at a time. This one time I got 2 cases of 15w/50 M1 extended life oil. Since the Aus market specs out this weight for for summer use I thought I'd try it.

COMMENTS:

Nothing too unusual showed up in the initial sample from your Land Cruiser. Wear levels read low and were well within the normal range for the 4.5L Toyota engine. These engines tend to wear very well, and this one is no exception. The universal averages column shows typical wear from this type of engine after about 4700 miles on the oil. Some fuel dilution was present, though not enough to suspect a fuel system problem. Fuel is common in engines that see city driving. The VIS went a little high on you. The TBN read 3.2, still active additive remaining. Looks good.

What do you guys think?
