I figure this is the place to ask...

Can I run a centered output transfer case to a cruiser offset rear axle without issue on a (long wheelbase) FJ45LV? Assuming the driveshaft doesn't bind will the combination angles cause problems?

I'm not planning to cut/turn the axle but I could if that would be a "good thing". I an leaving it SUA leafs. This will be a street driven truck with occasional dirt roads - expedition-style, no rock crawling.

Thanks,
mark

Mark, I am planning on doing the same thing, and after researching, it appears to work just fine as long as the the angles are not too extreme and the long wheelbase should certainly help. The early fj40's had a center diff with offset transfercase from the factory so Im pretty sure the ujoints dont care about the extra angle!

You wouldn't want to point the pinion up towards the t-case output unless you were going to run a cv joint. The side-to-side angle just adds to the overall u-joint angle. As long as it's not too extreme, it should be fine. It's pretty easy to measure or calculate what angle you'd end up with without doing any of the install work.

I was originally looking at that with my build, and it seemed double cardans were the way to go if you want to run such a set up. Not being lined up (t'case to axle) is no worse on a horizontal plane than it is on a vertical plane (truck with a decent sized lift), as long as it isn't too extreme.

Get pics of this, please!!

We are buddies... Chris mentioned on the phone earlier that it would not be a problem to do the centered/offset thing... he is a smart guy. He said he knew about someone that had done the centered/offset thing. I posted here, without mentioning to him that I was going to, in order to get some info from someone that had actually done it.:eek::eek::eek:

I currently have an offset t case with a centered rear. With a 12" rear drive shaft, I was amazed at how well it worked, I just needed to get through our event before case changes.

I thought that was a rude remark, i will leave it to you guys?

I only see Mark a few times a year, so when the opportunity arises to give him a hard time I must seize the moment. It's all in fun

driveshafts angles

hey ive been seeing alot of the issue your talking about on the newer kia's what ive found is that u have to put a cv on the differential side now they have a flange like a toy does so its not a problem the problem is cost if u only use the dline in extreme conditions then i wouldn't worry about angle issues and go with what u got but if in 4wd all the time you should go with that set up (cv on both ends ) iv only been building for 20 yrs i could be wrong

I ran a centered output Dana 300 with my FZJ80 rear axle for a couple of months and it was perfect at all highway speeds.. I only got rid of it for the 14 bolt for extra BEEF.
