Not a real problem without PS offroad....Be carefull-keep you fingers on the perimeter of the steering wheel-sometimes it will spin fast and may hit your fingers ...I know :-)

Great. Thanks guys. I've driven her for years without power steering with no issues on pavement and fire roads, just never anything more. Figured I'd be okay, but I needed a push. Time to order a rear locker and skid plate!

Are you going to Rausch and Anthracite alone, or with a group? I've been to Rausch at least four times now, all with LC groups: Bay to Blueridge cruisers, Capital City cruisers and Gotham City. All good groups.

The most important thing to keep in mind about wheeling with manual steering is a good attitude. You are NOT going to be able to hold every line you or your spotter pick, and you're going to have to back up more often than a rig with PS.

If you don't let a 'one shot, one kill' ego get in the way you'll be fine.

A rough trail with a three speed and no power steering definitely earns at least two punches in your man card. Last time I did that was about eighteen years ago in a 68 FJ55 in Moab. There was a point I wanted to get out and shoot my truck. Be warned, when you get through you'll
have the urge to roll your burger in the sand, chew glass and drink your beer out of old boots

I wheeled my 40 without power steering for 10 years, including 4-rated trails in Moab - it's not so bad as long as you are moving :meh:

and yes, thumbs out

Might I also recommend a good pair of bicycle gloves as driving gloves? Helps a bunch when you're arm wrestling with the steering wheel.

My first 'major' outing was the Rubicon in a '66 40 with a SOR posi in the rear w/out power steering. Such an experience!

Their was a time b4 people wore shoes, a time b4 people had toilet paper, and a time b4 power steering. But now all those things are available I have them all, especially toilet paper. Power steering was one of my first major mods. But I did wheel a lot without it at first. When I installed the Saginaw power steering I used a lot of junkyard parts. That reduced cost a awful lot.
