Yes, and no...

I fubar’d the dizzy and effed up the newly done engine. It’s back at Jackson Cylinder Head. :(

Damage is fairly minimal, but it was severe enough to have to go back to Geoff.

No updates on the build; parts are being plated.

What happened? Sorry to hear that.

Oil pump was not engaged by the dizzy that I had hacked on. Ran truck for about 5 minutes. Burned up the rod and mains.

An initial inspection by the engine shop showed Everything else was covered in oil and assembly lube and was/is ok. Crank will have to be re-machined, and bearings will need to be replaced. Hopefully that is all; waiting for the full report.

How did that happen? Was the distributor not fully seated?

No. The reason being, is that I had a new oil pump installed, and after repeatedly having trouble getting my dizzy to seat properly, I assumed the shoulder on the pump was about 1/4” too long, causing my dizzy to sit 1/4” proud of the mount. The cam gear felt fully seated, and after turning the engine over by hand, I did verify the gear was engaged and Turing the dizzy.

So, like a fool, I ground 1/4” of material off the bottom of the dizzy. Unfortunately, i ground off too much, and the bottom of the dizzy did not fully seat in the oil pump.

The rest is history....

Huge mistake on my end; I’ve never felt so stupid. A very hard lesson to learn. Very thankful that damage appears to be minimal. I have damaged bearings, a ruined distributor, and some hurt pride to show for it.

Won’t do that again...

So what was the ‘real’ problem? Was the oil pump incorrect or installed incorrectly?

I was confusing an incorrect length pump collar with not correctly lining up the tab on my dizzy with the socket on my pump. My stupidity was the ‘real’ problem.

I don’t think it was stupidity, and I certainly wasn’t implying that (sorry if it came across that way). I was just trying to learn something - what was the root of the problem...what was going to be changed when you put it back together next time to ensure this didn’t happen again. It sounds like the answer is the oil pump collar.

No. The collar is fine. It was the fact that I did not properly align the bottom of the the dizzy into the pump.

Entirely my fault. Easily prevented.

I wouldn't feel stupid over something like that. We've all done similar things. It's good to hear what happened so when the future point comes where others will do a similar install we will recall this post. Thanks for sharing.

Since we’re on the topics of engines.

I bought a 2F from @wngrog a few months ago. Looked to be pretty rough, but I saw a lot of useful parts that I wanted to clean up 2 bucket style and flip on fleabay. Finally got to taking it apart this week.

Took off the oil pan and....drumroll...everybody making the drumroll sound?

Took it apart to find out the engine is freshly built with all new parts. New pistons, new rings, new rods, new caps, new and also balanced crankshaft, new OE cam, new bearings, new lifters, new pushrods, new seals, new oil pump and oil pick-up. Everything is new. Cylinders are honed with a great cross-hatch too. Hell, even the oil pan is new. Someone spent a fortune on this thing.

It’s like someone got it built, then never put it back in the tuck. It stayed outside, were it got covered with grime and rust, and then traded hands enough times that no one knew its condition.

At first I thought it was just a low mileage 2F, but after finding the crankshaft bolts were replaced with non-jis zinc plated hardware, and noticing that the bottom on the block had machine marks when it makes contact with the oil pan gasket, I knew right away this was rebuilt.

I’m pumped! :bounce:

Not sure if I’ll sell it, or save it for my next 40. (Or maybe use it next time I eff up my distributor and screw up my engine...doh)

Out of respect for Nolen, I’ll not disclose how much I got it for. Let’s just say REAL cheap. :)

That’s cool. Truly I don’t care. I want people to get good things I sell. It’s hard to imagine that engine is that good. The entire outside looked like hammered hell. Crazy.

Yeah, go figure.

My guess is shortly after being rebuilt and installed, the cruiser was wrecked, and engine was saved. That’s the only explanation I can come up with. Why else would a perfectly good engine be sitting outside collecting grime and rust.

Glad things are looking up. I remember having the same issue getting the dizzy to seat on ‘Blue. Took a lot of cussin to get it just right.
