So I started with a 75 BJ40 with the original B engine and 4 spd transmission in June of 2018.

I quickly realized that driving this underpowered tractor in California I was going to need to find something to give it a little more pep in its step so I attempted to put a turbo kit on this ancient engine.

That unfortunately only brought doomsday for the poor little B engines life to an end three short weeks later when I tried to drive her to work for the first time. The turbo/B engine combo was no match for the smallest of hills and the highway spds of 55 MPH plus.
She over heated and I burnt up the third cylinder and that was all she wrote.
Left with a non driving 40, I quickly looked for a complete drivetrain solution to fill my empty and broken heart 💔.
After doing research for a few weeks and talking to a few buddy’s I thought I was set on the 2.8L Cummins diesel that I would marry to a H55F/transfer case combo. Long story short, I ended up not going that route because there wasn’t a complete solution that was yet developed for the 40 series.
This is when I came across Wink4x4 out of the Netherlands and Chris just happened to put his 12HT drivetrain up for sale. So I reached out to him and he was doing a 40 12HT install in his shop at the same time I decided to purchase the complete drivetrain, so he mocked the drivetrain up and customized it all to fit into the lifeless 40 I had sitting here in San Diego, CA.

Through all my indecisiveness with which route I was going to go, I bought and sold items here on IH8MUD, and through this venue I met YoYoHo who has a vast amount of knowledge on all things landcruiser. I told him my intentions on my build and he offered to help me see it through. While waiting for my crate to arrive with delays coming through customs YoYoHo decided to cut his FJ80 chassis to size to properly mock up his 43 body and is working on forever marrying of the two 🤵🏿👰🏼.

Aug 31st finally rolled around and the crate from overseas finally arrived!!

He also included a custom 3inch exhaust, dumping it out just before the rear driver side tire, a brand new radiator and intercooler. Custom length driveshafts, new heavy duty clutch.

Fast forward to last Saturday, a hot day in California in October and take whitey down to just the chassis commenced.

Some more shots of the 12HT sitting on the mounts with the manual steering box sitting nice and snug next to the turbo.

After getting the 12HT set to where we thought was good, we took her out, put her back in storage for the time being and continued with the taking apart of whitey.

12 hours in. All interior and electrical has been completely gutted, front bezel, cowl, aprons, B engine, 4 spd tranny, transfer case, and hardtop removed. Last step for the evening..

remove body from chassis and then decide since we are at this point. It’s time to go shopping for a reasonably priced FJ80.
More to follow on this...

I think silly enough to feed the fire of your obsession would be a better way to put it. Besides if I keep enough Cruisers kicking around the wife never knows which are mine and which aren't.

A lot of the decisions being made where based on some of the excellent work done by the PO and his need to update and "Improve" ...

Here are a few of my favorites......

Have you ever found yourself short on bolts or not sure which one to put where ?? Well the PO had a solution to that problem which he called "Awesome" no doubt BUT I like to call it Tech Screws on everything .... He used them on doors, wiper motor covers, front bezel, hard top sides, flares etc etc

Another great thing he did was avoiding the prices of a Land Cruiser Master Cylinder but simply making an adapter and running a Nissan POS. Obviously a master fabricator he mad up an adapter and welded it in place ...

LOL! At least you started yours first! It’s happened to me several times where I’ve been talking with friends/customers about something I’m planning to try and they ask me to do theirs first!

Looks like neat 80, maybe just lift it, lock it, barwork and forget the 40 :)

For anyone interested the rattle gun will be out tomorrow and the 80 will be killed. Anyone looking for parts off it get in quick as it won't sit around for long.

I will let @B3as7808 fill in the blanks but I woke up with a headache and a semi naked 80 in the shop .

This is becoming a bad habit and I am even getting some 80 series hate mail lol
