So I started with a 75 BJ40 with the original B engine and 4 spd transmission in June of 2018.
I quickly realized that driving this underpowered tractor in California I was going to need to find something to give it a little more pep in its step so I attempted to put a turbo kit on this ancient engine.
That unfortunately only brought doomsday for the poor little B engines life to an end three short weeks later when I tried to drive her to work for the first time. The turbo/B engine combo was no match for the smallest of hills and the highway spds of 55 MPH plus.
She over heated and I burnt up the third cylinder and that was all she wrote.
Left with a non driving 40, I quickly looked for a complete drivetrain solution to fill my empty and broken heart .
After doing research for a few weeks and talking to a few buddy’s I thought I was set on the 2.8L Cummins diesel that I would marry to a H55F/transfer case combo. Long story short, I ended up not going that route because there wasn’t a complete solution that was yet developed for the 40 series.
This is when I came across Wink4x4 out of the Netherlands and Chris just happened to put his 12HT drivetrain up for sale. So I reached out to him and he was doing a 40 12HT install in his shop at the same time I decided to purchase the complete drivetrain, so he mocked the drivetrain up and customized it all to fit into the lifeless 40 I had sitting here in San Diego, CA.
Through all my indecisiveness with which route I was going to go, I bought and sold items here on IH8MUD, and through this venue I met YoYoHo who has a vast amount of knowledge on all things landcruiser. I told him my intentions on my build and he offered to help me see it through. While waiting for my crate to arrive with delays coming through customs YoYoHo decided to cut his FJ80 chassis to size to properly mock up his 43 body and is working on forever marrying of the two .
