yeah absolutely. The tune improves a lot down low.

I am curious what about the stock tune keeps the gains so good below 4000 rpm, but minimal above.

Could be some sort of lower RPM torque management. Worth noting that the graph is for a Tundra, which would be more likely to artificially neuter the bottom end for wheelspin/safety reasons.
 
I did some back to back testing on my 2017 LX570 with the OTT tune that Lonestar Yota Tuning flashed for me. Did a ton of "virtual dyno" pulls with the cellphone before and after on the same roads, same temperatures, to keep it constant for testing variables. The results were interesting, there's definitely more power and torque. If you watch the video starting at the 19:20 mark, that's where I start talking about and reviewing the virtual dyno power measurements. I know its not perfect, but it's data, with constants and variables, and shows what the % gains were for the most part.

I’m not a tuner but my gut says it’s due to how they adjust camshaft timings. When I looked at one of the tuner packages explanations it seemed like tuning was generally a series of trade offs… get more power at low RPM but sacrifice some at high RPM. There probably are some overall “free” gains in the stock Toyota tune which this tune also picks up, with the net effect of lots of low end gains but still keeping the high end flat

Most people at running 4k RPMs plus most of the time, so low RPM gains are not only more useful but also give you the butt-dyno confirmation.

Agreed, but there are also better transmission shift points in there. You are rarely, if ever in that bog down mode where you are in the wrong gear and it's very smooth.

Good to know. I was only commenting specifically on why it would make more low end power but not change the high end

I really want a transmission flash that changes up how ECT PWR works when you go into S mode… change to whatever gear you were in while in D (not necessarily 4th), more low end power, lock to the actual gear selected, don’t unlock the torque converter except during shifts.

The normal tune is fine for me around town with my gearing, and ECT PWR is fun but so twitchy off the line my wife and kids turn it off. I really just want a good tow mode option and am tempted to buy the kit to create thing there’s not a flash for it.

Most likely. I don't know much about the 5.7 engine but variable cam timing is commonly used by OEMs for emissions/exhaust gas recirculation by increasing overlap. Tuning removes the EGR effect, so a greater percentage of the intake charge is fresh air. The engine wants more overlap at higher rpm anyway so past a certain point it no longer matters. Low RPM torque management mentioned earlier might also be a factor.
