So I finally took the plunge (hope I'm posting this in the right spot). Picked up a 1990 Land Cruiser this evening. Second owner - 179,000 miles, almost zero rust and engine humming. It needs some TLC, but all the bones appear to be great and the interior is in excellent condition (sitting under a three year old coat of dust and dirt). Big thanks to everyone on this thread...a wealth of information. Also, a big thanks to @DoubleNickels for giving it a once over before I pulled the trigger!

I plan on spending the next few months bringing her back to life and will document for those interested. First order of business is a car wash and deep clean. Cheers!

Welcome to the cult! Er... club! Yes, do document the project. A little bit of TLC will go a LONG ways with your rig. No rust, interior completely intact, awesome.

Welcome

Very nice. Congratulations.

Looks great! No rust is VERY nice! I'm dealing with that right now on a '90 that we picked up from a friend...I'll be posting a thread with my journey soon on that! Congrats on a clean ride!!

Project Update

Once I got over the dreaming phase (what color should I paint her, 33's or 32's, should I put in an early order for a WoodWright custom wood grain dash....?) I've spent the past few days taking inventory, assessing the major issues and sketching out a plan of attack. The following outlines my initial plan. Thankfully the bones are good and zero rust!

Once again big props to this forum. I had @DoubleNickels give me his initial assessment and followed it up with an evaluation by an IH8mud.com recommended mechanic here in Boise, ID (Tony at Boise Foreign Car Service is first class). I was comforted that both came back with similar recommendations!

Phase 1 - really job one...this was still in dreaming phase before the assessment was done...honestly @DoubleNickels and I had a free hour this week and were itching to dive in!
Fix the lockers that wouldn't turn all the way from free to lock. Turned out the PO simply had them installed wrong and even used a wrench to try and turn them the first time I looked at it ! We removed the hub, set to free, reinstalled and they were as smooth as butter. Pretty nice day one!!!

Phase 2 - to be accomplish by May 31
Replace all coolant bypass hoses: small pin hole leak in one so others are likely deteriorating
Address oil issues: valve adjustment, valve cover, pan gasket, oil cooler o ring, side cams, oil pan clean, etc.
General tune up: new spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, distributor cap, etc.
Replace fluids: oil, transmission, brake fluid, etc.
Muffler and tailpipe: replace
Passenger side mirror: replace
Land Cruiser and 4WD emblem: replace
Antena: replace
Throttle cable: adjust
After market cruise control: remove
New tires: order
Front bumper: replace
Shocks: replace
Leaf springs: repair
Interior: deep clean
Rear lift hydraulics: replace
Window tint: remove
Passenger side running light: replace
Windshield wipers: replace

Phase 3 - to be accomplished by June 15
Body paint - dark gray
Wheels - flat black
Tires: install
All weather mats: install
Stereo: replace
Window tint: install
Light bar: .........maybe.....

Phase 2 and painting the wheels I plan to do myself (well with some help from @DoubleNickels). I might try and do the paint prep myself, but will likely outsource most if not all that job. I'm sure they'll be more as we dive in, but looking forward to the journey.

Stay tuned and feedback is welcomed!

Aw shucks, looking for the "blushing" emoji...

Seriously though, @Hoosier2611 doesn't realize my willingness to assist will change when his rig's cool factor surpasses my own...;). New paint, bumper, no rust, I'm jealous already!

A year later and finally ready for a project update. I've checked off pretty much everything on my to-do list (items list in previous post). Really happy with how everything turned out. I use it as my daily driver and exploring the Idaho backcountry.

Let me know your thoughts/questions. Next project is fixing the driver side seat.

Big thanks to a number of people on this thread for advice/insights. A really big thanks to the guys/gals at Boise Foriegn Car Service. Top notch!

A few more pics of the interior. Kept the red wheel wells as a nod to the original color. Need to tackle the driver's seat. The console was freshened up with black plasti-dip.
