Hello all!

I'm the new proud owner of a 1978 FJ40... Have been searching for about a 9mo or so for a good fit, and this one had my name on it. I've had it about a week, and still getting this and that fixed up on it. The plan is to make it my daily driver (I don't drive a ton) and to use it as an adventure-mobile for some occasional off-roading. The last I've really wrenched on a car was in my 20's (used to autocross), and it feels good to get my hands dirty again.

I don't know much about the car history... All I know it was imported from Europe, restored here (where they swapped a US speedo in, as its in MPH). It's only been stateside a few years. So far engine / tranny work real smooth, no difficulty starting it, and the paint job is a solid B-, but it still puts a BIG smile on my face! That said, there are lots of little electrical gremlins I've been chasing down here and there. In the last week, I've got the running lights / headlights back up and running, the parking brake light and the fuel gauge. Still need to get oil pressure / engine temp gauges working, find a hazard light switch, dome light, amidst tons of other things. I haven't found much if any rust, and my main focus right now is on safety stuff (headrests, roll bar pads, seatbelts, parking brake, hook catch all need addressing).

Future plans for the car might include some sound deadening, but not sure on that yet. I will definitely get a heater back in the car (I'd like to keep it as stock as I can), and I'm looking for other bits and bobs that seem to be missing (usually starts with me wondering what a given hole is for, doing some searches, and then trying to chase down another part).

Glad to be on the forum! Many a google search in the past several months have brought me here for answers, and I'm really digging the learning process.

I agree looks nice. What did it cost? There is a vendor section (some better than others) and a classified section to look for used parts.
Then there is the free download manuals Land Cruiser Factory Service Manuals (FSMs) - https://www.cruisercult.com/factory-service-manuals
I spent 42k for it, feel like I overpaid by 5-10k after finding about all the electrical niggles / missing parts... Bought it site unseen based on the reputation of the garage, but feel like I shoulda taken the time off work to go look at the car myself first. Oh well, I'm still very happy to have the car, and have enjoyed troubleshooting / fixing things more than I thought I would.

My intent was not to buy a project car (the house is currently a project house / mid-reno), but here we are! Life gives you lemons, etc.

Its only money. I don't buy anything sight unseen that's expensive anymore, too many scammers these days or folks that have no clue.
Best advice I ever got was buy the unit for what it has/is not the story.

Had mine for 42 years now. That would be a Starbuck's a day to get yours.

That makes good sense... I definitely bought this with the heart not the brain, but either way its in the garage now and something to wrench on. Kids absolutely love it, the jump seats especially. When I was looking for FJs, I had to narrow my search for 75's and later to get the ambulance doors so the kids could get in and out of it on their own. We've only been able to drive it around the block without seatbealts, but the kids are already askin to go on drives, its great.

Hope to have mine as long as you've had yours!

It looks great! Try seatbeltsplus.com I think that’s where I got mine.

Looks like a keeper. Congratulations!

Great perspective. These things can so easily be impulsive buys. But I’m sure we all have lessons learned post sale - I certainly have on LCs i’ve owned. Whatever economic regrets I’ve had have always (at least so far!) been offset by the rewards of ownership - the satisfaction of completing each fix (big or small, especially when DIY), the engaged driving experience, constant random stranger thumbs up, etc., etc.

@procomsignathid Now that you’re in CO and if you’re near the Denver area(?) be sure to check out the RS Club. Very active club (they put on Cruise Moab) and a great bunch of guys and gals from what little bit of time I’ve spent around some of them.

That's a nice looking rig. You do get what you pay for. You think that paint job is a B-?! I'll trade paint with you any day. How's about some interior pics? Or are you too embarrassed;-)

Ha! Not too embarrassed, Ill take some pics tomorrow to show some progress anyhow. Been working on a seatbelt install today and replacing the ambulance door lock. I8MUD already to the rescue, was scratching my head with the clocking of the barrel (could either lock or unlock the car but in the alternate orientation could not remove the key), but looks like I was definitely not the first person to run into it (one 90-degree turn of the barrel and i was fine).

Progress update / some pics:

Pic of the driver side right in front of the door (some orangepeel), for those wondering why I say B- paint job. Im honestly not worried about it, respraying is not on my radar.

Installed replacement roll bar pads so the kids don’t hurt their noggins, and installed new seatbelts all around. Was going to get replacement jump seat straps, but no need now!

Replaced the rearview mirror with a toyota part (has the dimming lever), old one was a very flimsy chineseium mirror.

Some electrical stuff fixed:
-parking brake warning light
-fuel gauge
-blinker indicator lights

Stuff still not working:
-gauge lights (for night driving)
-high beam indicator light
-oil pressure
-engine temp
