Hey, I'm fairly new to ABQ. In the AF and have been here for 9 months. I just bought a '72 FJ40 and was looking for recommendations for a place in town that could do a power steering install. I probably won't be doing serious off-roading with it so I was thinking the mini truck ps would work. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to Albuquerque and the forum.
As for an answer to your question, any number of shops can do the work but I do not know of any that specialize in Land Cruisers and power steering.
You could stop by Coach's Chassis on Cochiti, near the base, and asked around. They may have some suggestions.

Do it yourself. I would recommend an FJ6x conversion because it eliminates the drag link and you will have less slop in the steering. Plus it will be much cheaper to get bone yard parts than say a Saginaw kit. You should check that FJ62 at pull n pay, it might still have the box and pump.

what he said.^ do it yourself. there should be plenty of us here that have done it (me included x3) and can help with advice if not turning some wrenches with you.

You need to mount the FJ6X box in front of the shock tower, and will need grind out the inside rib of the shock tower (or use a Ford shock tower) You also need to weld a plate to box in the frame on the inside. You will need a 70 series relay rod end 45044-60H03 (Cruiser Dan can get this for you) to tie into the tie rod. I am using a 3FE which came with a power steering pump. Not sure what engine you are running but that will determine your pump path forward.

Thanks for the help. For me, it's more of a time issue and not having the welding equipment. I like the FJ6x setup, I'll definitely look into it.

I did FJ60 on my FJ40. I wish I had gone Saginaw.

I had mini truck PS then went to saginaw, then went hydro assist. for around town only the 60 series is best. but any off road in the future, you'll want something stronger if your tires go over 31-33".

I love the 60 series PS in the 40.

The 40 doesn't have wide tires (33x9.50s), but the 60 series PS is super strong for the truck. On the 60s it's also more than adequate to me (both my 60 and Dad's 60 have 33x10.50)

Some mythical day when I get to work on my 45, I'll be essentially doing the 60 series steering again, for sure.

Dan
