New Style Man-a-Fre Headers and a Desmog later....

Very True. I did the rebuild kit from $or about a year and a half ago; and I don't recommend it. The accel boot tore a little over two months ago, and the plunger was a tight fit.

The tech man at jt outfitters mentioned the flange was a "standard" design, and it does look very similar to the maf one.

I might go as far as to cut it to match the maf one, if anyone can confirm a two flange seals better than a single

GLTHFJ60, and you don't even have a 5 speed. Do you think you are getting such great gas mileage because you desmogged your truck? that must be it right? I am envious!

I'm confident that the desmog combined with the carb rebuild gave me the majority of my mpg increase. MAF says that the headers provide 25hp and 3-4mpg, which I'm skeptical of, but it definitely breathes better and sounds amazing.

It looks like Downey does not make a header for the 60?

Part numbers 17410-FC and 17410-FCC say that they are for whatever through 87 Landcruisers.

you should have gotten the ceramic MAF. The thing that is going to cost you is the fact that cheap headers are going to rust a lot sooner (paint just does NOT hold up and even chrome pales in comparison to ceramic), and they are going to leak a lot sooner. And all of them are very expensive to have taken out and re-installed (or take a lot of effort to install them). So you are going to spend less now, but a lot more (time and money) in the long run.

I agree that mine will rust faster because it's painted, but I'm not sure about the leaking. Only time will tell I guess...

I made the mistake of not letting the paint cure for long enough (~1 hour instead of 12-14 hours) and some of the paint baked off. Oh well, still have a wire brush and the majority of my can of paint.

That's exactly what I thought when I saw that JT Outfitters header. I bet that if you take a grinder and have at it, you can get the same effect as my set of headers, (the MAF ones pictured).

Next time I buy a carb rebuild kit, I'm buying it from CDan.

Called around, maf is out of their new style like the ones glthfj60 is running. I spoke with mark's offroad, he has three headers left, $270 a piece. Downey's are around $325 iirc for chrome, and $370 for ceramic. Money's sort of tight and I'm in a bit of a time crunch, so I went with some jt outfitters for $159. Another member here is running the jt outfitter's, photos under the thread "my desmog." I spoke with their tech, and they sound alright. American made, supposed to feature easier access to clutch, etc. I was disappointed that the flange is a single piece as opposed to maf's two. I've heard the double flange helps stop leakages.

Your gonna kick yourself for getting the JT headers. They will most likely warp. They will leak. A year from now you will be looking for threads on how to do double gaskets.

If I had to do it all over again I'd rather run with leaky stock exhaust than the single piece 6-1. I've been through 2 sets of 6-1 from two different venders and they suck after 6 months.

Knowing what I know now I'd run stock and loose very little performace over the tuned. The MAF tuned or 3fe manifolds. I'm running the later currently.

ooops.:o

So you don't think cutting the flange in half would help any?
I'll have to hold onto my stocker...

oh the talk of headers, i've used the o'l tri mill crap black header for five years with two felpro gaskets and have no problems yes i have to go and re tighten the bolts and nuts on occasion big deal some times i blow out a collector gasket too..

my real question is john did you ever get that heat riser ?

matt-

Matt, I did! I apologize for not thanking you, but the package came while I was away on a mission trip and I completely forgot.

I got it and I will go ahead and install it as soon as I get a chance. Thank you!!

I live in Fl, so I doubt i'll be doing the heat riser. If I need it this winter, I'll add one on.
I will be receiving two gaskets for the headers, is the consensus two is best?

I would cut the flange into two. I think it would help if it wanted to warp. I don't see how it could hurt.

I don't think that there is a consensus on 1 vs. 2 gaskets. The only consensus is to make sure it's a Felpro.

My Disclaimer: I'm just putting this out there for posterity, not to be a jerk.

I'll kind of echo Chris777's comments. I have the MAF 3-1 Ceramic coated header (on the truck when I bought it, so cost wasn't an issue) After the 5 years that I've owned it, the header looks like it did the day I bought the truck - not a speck of rust or discoloration -except for the mud ;) It doesn't leak (I have a single fel-pro gasket), it sounds great, and I love driving it - I constantly get the comment that it sure sounds like I've got a V8 instead of a sixer.

GLTH - good on ya for doind all that work yourself - it's satisfying isn't it? I went through the same thing- only I did it all while replacing the headgasket and having the head worked.

I run my timing in the neighborhood of 17* advanced - but I tuned it by feel- there is no concrete number. I also live at around 4100' so that may have some to do with it. I run an H42 (soon to be H41 eventually) stock 3.70's, and 33x10.5 AT's. My in-town mileage is about 14 and I regularly get 17 on the highway.

Yeah, I would have liked to have the ceramic coating, but the cost was too much of a hike. When my header starts rusting this winter, I'll slap some more paint on.

17* BTDC? Awesome. How's the power at highway speeds? Smooth acceleration through the powerband?

Right now I've removed my smog pump, and am replacing it with an Ac Delco alternator I pulled off my other 60 before I tossed it. Made the spacer, and will weld up a tensioner tonight. I'm having trouble finding the right belt, I need like a 42 1/8". I'll get that and post up pics when finished most likely tomorrow afternoon.
Headers come in tuesday. I noticed that my trucks had two different head gaskets, one was aftermarket, the other oem i believe. Both were excellent. I also have a fel pro backup head gasket incase the one I ordered is inferior.

So you running dual alternators or going to mount a york in the upper position?

I'm planning on moving my alt to the 3FE location (2F smog pump) so that I can run a york where it originally was.

GLTH,
I've tried moving the alternator down to the F/3F location, but found it wouldn't fit under the PS pump bracket. If it was tipped out from under the PS, then it bumped into the PS gearbox.

I think there is space there, if a custom lower pivot bracket was fabbed to drop the alternator 1/2" to clear the PS pump. I was just trying to throw the alternator in there using all stock parts.

Do post up pics if you get it to fit.

Jim, I'm 99% positive that it can be done with a modified US 3FE bracket. Kevin Rowland gave me the idea because he did it with his 2F when he had it (dual alt setup).

I have to do some more mods (trailer hitch / wiring, FF + 4.11 conversion) before I get around to mounting my york, but it will come eventually.

I got it to work with the stock 2f brackets. On the delco alt it is almost identical to the smog pump with the exception that the pivot bolt slide is about an inch shorter. To cure, I made an inch long tube to compensate. There are two 12mm bolts holding on the tension bracket, I just pulled the inner one and allowed the arm to pivot, letting me line up the tensioning screw to the alt.
It can be fitted, but finding a belt is difficult. A 42 and 5/8" belt could be used in an emergency, but it positions the alt too close to the frame. My local parts store couldn't get a belt a tad smaller until next week. The headers come in tomorrow, so I just opted to gut the smog pump for now.
Here's a pic of it off my other truck. I put many miles on this setup with no isssues.

I can't seem to find any pics showing how that water fitting on the head sits. You know, the one next to the water temp sender? It's a two ported piece, can't remember how it's arranged or what goes to it?

Hey Johnny, I think Jim was talking about making it work with the stock smog bracketry. Works very well with the 3F bracket, but that is almost like cheating and not everyone has a spare 3F sitting around.
Yes, I did not have any 3FE bracketry available.
Tried to use 70-74 bottom alternator bracket, 81-87 air pump adjuster arm and 79-87 IC alternator. It almost fit.

But now I'm gonna go try it using a 78 or 81 air pump bracket in lieu of the alt bracket, in case they are lower.

sorry for hijacking the desmog thread...
