Does anyone have a clear picture of a stock '78 FJ40 that shows how the original system is supposed to be run? Thanks, JMP

See the 6 attached photos of my 78. I think this is all original. The muffler I just recently pulled and it seems stock/original. That's the stock skid plate (painted black) above the muffler. The pipe makes a nice place to rest the skid plate when you're putting it on by yourself :-).

Interesting. The old system was sent so that the shop could recreate it exactly. i'm trying to find clear pics of the old system on the vehicle to see where it ran.

From the factory it was under the skid plate. Rock crawling will severely damage it. Ask how I know that. This is how I have it today with a custom skid plate. You can route it above the factory skid plate, I did. The exhaust in the photos cleared the factory skid plate and needed no rework for the custom skid. I'm using the MAF tuned headers.

I think '78 LCs routed the exhaust above the skid plate. Isn't there a cut-out in the front lip of the skid plate just inside the DS frame rail just for this purpose?

Wrong. My '78 Fed-spec had the factory exhaust below the skid plate.

The cut-out in the skid plate on mine is for the PTO driveshaft going to the winch in front.

bsevans, thats a nice skid plate. how much did that run you?

Check out the link in his sig line - he details cost, design, etc. In fact, you should check out all the links in his sig line. Fantastic stuff there.
