Well i figured out she doesnt like starting in the cold. Drove it in to work a night shift the other day, it was probably hovering around 0* overnight and she took 6 long cranks with full choke to get going in the morning. Had me thinking i was gonna kill the battery and be asking for a ride at one point.

I kind of expected this from the van but the icing on the cake is the tool in the ford exploder that was waiting for my parking spot with his signal on. The time this idiot wasted waiting for me he could have parked and been in his office sitting at his desk. I blame him for pressuring me into not letting it warm up enough and it being a pain in the ass till about 1/3 way home.

I still enjoy driving the slow pos but a fuel injected something or other wouldnt be a bad thing..

Thats the story.

Bah, by the time i got everything id need to make it a fuelie id still have a motor from 1976 with unknown mileage and history. I had a chance to snag a 3fe for free at one point and i do have a freshly rebuilt (supposedly) 2f thats stuck? for some strange reason but i think id still go to a v8 of some sort. Got to drive a fuelied fj45 a few summers ago and while it was great it wasnt enough to inspire me to do mine.

My buddy just picked up a yukon denali with the 6L for 700 bucks, he kept the motor and trans. After selling the front clip and the tires and rims he was into it for 200... and thats before taking what was left to the scrapper. I find it hard to even think of sticking with the f motor let alone modifying one when a s***load of power and reliability can be had for, all things considered, dirt cheap.

That being said, im not rich so all of this is just dreaming and talking out my ass.

Back to the build, to get the lowboy arms to work we had to move the axle end panhard mount up about 1.5". With the new set up the tre's sit on top of the steering arm instead of below it like the stocker arms, turning drivers everything cleared but turning passenger the tie rod made contact with the panhard bolt almost immediately. I cut part of the old mount off after making templates then made up a new extended one. Worked out perfectly and im able to turn lock to lock. Mount had to be moved up anyways since the drag link was at a slacker angle and they both now sit at 3*.

Filled the steering stops in with solid stock and welded em all up nicely since a couple were starting to deform.. something I should have done a while ago.

While i was rebuilding the knuckles i double checked my caster and came up with approximately 2.5-3* and after picking white stripes brain decided not to cut and or turn for more. Kind of glad because after getting rid of the fj60 spring loaded tre's of which i had 2 and taking some play out of the steering box the freaking thing drives better than it ever has. The massive dead spot is now just a little one and the ruffstuff cure thingie seems to have stopped the tie rod from flipping every time i turn left or right. Met a couple friends for coffee on the other end of town last night and was so surprised at how well it drove that on the way home i took a detour and drove some twisty, bumpy back roads to make sure I wasn't dreaming. Nope day and night for sure.

The only bad thing is since we put the top on it no longer fits in my garage without swapping the rear tires out to the little ice racers.. We tried winching the front suspension down to the stops and ratchet strapping the rear down to about 1/2" from the stops and then we took lots of air out of the rear tires and stacked bricks and buckets of sand in the back.... to finally get it to fit. Thats way too much bs and swapping the rears is so much easier if i need it in there so for now its staying outside.

End of nonsensical rant.

I hear you on the v8. I guess Im just emotionally attatched to the 2f. It has some character to it that I like. If you are parking it outside, I bought a jeep wrangler car cover off of ebay for like 50 bucks for mine, it fits pretty decent. Will help protect it a bit. When I parked my cruiser for years I had a custom high quality cover made that fit perfect, it lasted about 4 years in the Colorado sunshine, but cost about 350.00. Or you get a small winch for the rear mounted on the crossmember and winch down the suspension and maybe find a way to use the front winch to winch down the front suspension. A small harbor freight winch is pretty cheap with a coupon. Glad its handling well, having a cruiser you can drive around on the street comfortably is a big bonus in my opinion over having a rock buggy that you can only take out on the weekends a few times a year.

Yup, tried the winch thing and still no go. I can hook the winch to the front axle using the drain holes i put in the pipe cap diff cover when i made it, the winch line clears all the steering so i was able to winch down close to the stops in the front. In the rear we used a massive ratchet strap to get it sucked down but still had to deflate the tires to about 6psi. An atv winch in the rear may be in the future. .. but i still doubt it would fit.

Working on a drastic plan that may involve cutting 2 partial wheel slots in the concrete floor that would allow the rear tires to sit lower than the front. This way both the sixty which just to say squeaks in on 40s and the 40 with its bubble top would fit with no dicking around.

Peetie and I took both cruisers to the secret secret spot the other day and snapped some pictures. Pete had to be cool and make a video with sweet tunes...

Photobucket sucks. Heres a link to some progress pics since i cant seem to post pictures here anymore. Built a tire carrier, threw a more period correct steering wheel in and swapped in the old leaf packs from the 60 to get the bum up a little higer.

Got the 40 wheel to work on the 60 column by removing the 2 signal cancel pins it came with and drilling 3 partial holes in the back of the hub that accept the 60 signal cancel doohickey. Otherwise it bolted right in.

PS. If anyone has an easier way to link pictures please feel free to share your interwizardry.

Host directly on the forum. I use google photos and copy images inline when I write posts. Super easy.

Darwink, your cruiser build is awesome:beer:, I hope you solve the photo issue.

Remember you have to shrink the photo before you click upload file. As NoeyR said, make sure you click Full Image so we don’t have to click on thumbnails:deadhorse:

On my iPhone the “minima” app works pretty slick. You can get the free version, you can upgrade to “pro” to eliminate the watermark.

Can always count on that Noel guy! Thanks!! Ill try that minima dealie if i figure out the first part... dont hold your collective breath though.

Edit. Holy s*** im a computerologist!! Thank you you beautiful bastards!
