How all proper projects should start, precariously stacked steel bits and beer can spindles.

Love the gas tank paint and sticker

SICK rig man!

Thanks, it's all paint man! Ripped the "Gazoline" off of the french side of an old gas can i have and the scully deal is just some nonsense i drew up. Wish i had painted the tank mango tango.

Bear with me as I ramble about drivetrain related things. I picked up a 5.3 ls motor for the 40 from an 06 avalanche a few weeks ago and am now trying to figure out what to put behind it. I have an AA adaptor to mate a th350 to my orion already and the 350 will bolt up to the 5.3 so thats one possibility (the 5.3 is drive by wire so id have to hook the kick down cable to the pedal).

This was the plan and it made the most sense since i have the adaptor already. The catch would be that id definitely need to mess with the driveshafts which makes things more expensive.

Talked to a buddy today who has an sm420 chev 4 speed with a 7 to 1 1st gear and the matching bellhousing... I would need the adaptor from the transmission to the orion t case but with this set up theres a chance the drive shafts wouldnt need to be dicked with.. and I'd end up with a pretty damn low 1st gear.

Im leaning towards the standard trans now since I know I'll like it better and it'll suit the 40 more than an auto.

As far as the drive by wire goes i was planning to swap it out for a drive by cable throttle body and had one lined up but my 5.3 has the wrong computer and I'd need to find one that would be compatible. To get around this a buddy of mine hacked up his dbw pedal assembly and made it work with the stock gas pedal crom his cj by running a short cable from it to whats left of the dbw assembly... Sounds simpler than dicking with new computers..

These are my jumbled and more than likely incoherent thoughts thus far. Feel free to chime in if youve got anything to add..

I wouldn't worry too much about driveshaft, it only cost like 100 bucks to have a driveshafts length adjusted. I have a sm465, it's a newer relative of the sm420. I paid 75 bucks for it and that's a typical price for a 465. Make sure u can still get rebuild parts for the 420 before u buy one. Those transmissions are really tough but haven't been made for a while.

Threw some bump stop pads on the frame last night. Been meaning to make some up for a while now, the driver side bump stop was ok but the passenger side was getting chewed up when the suspension was flexed out. Cut out two 4x5", 1/4" plate pads and a couple small spacer pieces then welded them on. s***ty potato pictures but the pads extend 2" past the inner edge of the frame.

FWIW this is pretty much how Cummins did the drive by wire on the '98-01 24 valve diesel motors for Dodge. A cable from the pedal assembly in the cab to a Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (throttle position sensor in normal EFI-speak) on the motor. The computer then tells the motor what to do once it gets the info from the APPS.

Love the "Gazoline" and painted tank too!

Right on Nick, doesn't seem like it would be too hard to make it work. As a bonus, doing it this way theres a chance i can keep my hand throttle and hook up the kick down cable for the trans (if i go auto) where the old throttle cable attached.

Bought a th350 from a buddy last night so I guess the decision has been made, auto it is. Also figured out that the 350 AA adapter does require the new output shaft that comes in the AA kit.... that i dont have. The one in the tranny now doesnt stick out far enough. Planning to call AA when they open to see if its available seperate from the kit.

I would just send you ECU to PSI, for $150 you can have it however you want it, cable throttle, stand-alone, etc.

Oh yeah? My buddy whos doing the harness for me sent me a list of computers that can go from dbw to dbc and it wasnt on it. Strange.

Bunch of crap came in, tranny is getting a refresh/the new output shaft put in, and the 5.3 got decrustified.

Got the tranny back yesterday, it got new clutch packs, new pump, the aa output shaft and a reseal. Cleaned up and bolted the adaptor on last night and made the 5.3 a little more presentable.

Started taking the van apart only to find that the gas tank has been seeping..

Thinking of trying the por15 gas tank repair kit on it... Anyone with experience using this feel free to chime in.
