I am fortunate to have recently acquired a 1979 FJ40 and am unsure where to start prioritizing a road- worthy restoration. It came with several improvements - 6 cyl from an 89 FJ60 (rebuilt carb, new headers), power steering, old man emu suspension (2 inch lift), and a few smaller others. Has the 3-speed. Passed rather stringent Virginia safety and emissions tests. how best to prioritize preservation/further upgrades? I'm overseas so am having a family member act as a go-between with a local mechanic.

Are you sure it's a '79? Doors/top seem to say otherwise.

Sorry - fat fingering on a phone. One six says 1969 but Virginia titles it as a 1970. Top is new but cap is sealed with a crap caulk job. Mechanic gave thumbs up to frame, brakes, tires, but wants to repack bearings and rear diff (slow leak on the trailer).
I would add 4 wheel disc brakes, it will stop much better. Looks like your missing a skid plate btw.

What kit do you recommend to switch to disc brakes?
Their are many options. Fj60 or Toyota pickup knuckles with discs are great for the front. For the rear their are aftermarket options that a search will bring up results so you can see what kit is best for you.
