Hello from TX. New member here. Previous 80 owner, multiple Toyotas in my history, but never a 60. Moving back to the mountain west this spring.

I’ve got a power wagon pretty well set up to meet all of my off-roading/hunting/camping/fishing needs.

I’m considering finding a mostly original 60 series that can be a slow restoration type of project for myself and my kid. Goal being more of a family heirloom type of collectors truck vs modding it for mudding.

Open to opinions on buying a 60 for that? They obviously hold their value. I don’t want to offend saying I won’t wheel it, but I’d like build one as close to an original as possible and don’t intend to beat on it like I did my 80 or now my PW.

There's something very classic about a bone stock 60. No suspension lift, no add-ons, just stock as the day they came from Toyota.

So I’m partial to the FJ62 and am currently working to base line the vehicle to stock FSM. Both 60/62’s are great platforms and have plenty of info for you and your family to work on restoring. Would suggest that you get one as complete as possible with as little rust as possible. Don’t worry, there will be plenty of work maintaining a forty plus year old rig!
Have fun!

Haven’t seen many decently clean 62’s come up for sale. There is a pretty nicely done 60 on here down in Houston, really looks like only non factory stuff is a rack, 2” lift and a stereo.

I haven’t been much of a shop work guy since early college and my old impala, so I need a well kept canvas.

But I agree, the 62 has a great look with that front end, I’m a fan.

This! A 60 just being the go-anywhere station wagon it was meant to be.

I am in the same minority. I choose a 62 specifically for the front end look

Disgusting... JK they are all really good looking trucks.
I feel like the main reason I wouldn't go the 62 route is for the transmission but that can be easily fixed with a h55 swap.
Yeah, an automatic transmission is an instant deal breaker for me. I just grew up driving manuals and even took my driving test in one when I was 15. :)
But, if someone handed me a 62 sporting an H55, I certainly would not say no.

Well, what goes around—comes around! After 37 years of ownership, I’ve never viewed as many cruiser-heads rising up and publicly rejoicing over the stigmatized four-eyed face of the 62’s. Back in the day, not to long ago, new 62 owners were swapping-in complete 60 “eye-ball” front clips to rid themselves of the newly styled and historically unacceptable rectangular four eyed face lift.
As for my 62, she’s finally celebrating her advanced age…and enjoying the excitement!

Seriously take into the consideration the fact that there’s so many parts on this vehicle that are no longer available.

I say look for a low to no rust FJ60 and being in TX you may be able to find one. FJ60, being almost entirely mechanical, may be a better vehicle to work on with your kid than a FJ62, because the FJ60 is more simple and addressing mechanical issues more straightforward. Finding a good FJ60 candidate may be be easier than finding a similar FJ62 due to availability, more 60s produced than 62s, plus 62s seem to be commanding a higher price.

Parts availability will be an issue, but if not a primary or daily driven vehicle that will not matter that much. Toyota has been and continues to drop part support but the aftermarket is filling that void. A lot of great vendors here that will have the essentials.

If you do get a 60 series and do some stage of a restoration take it out, lock the hubs, and do some mild 4 wheeling. That's what these vehicles are built for and even a stock 60 series is quite capable.
