I never thought twice about FJ60's until a buddy of mine told me his brother had one for sale for $3500. After going online and checking them out I was hooked. I scrolled through a bunch of posts on this site and immediately called him and bought it. I was in the market for a new car and I thought I would rather have a truck that keeps its value. Here is the scoop:
1985 FJ60 103K miles with immaculate interior. Recently purchased new tires and new shocks. Otherwise stock except for front bumper and lights. It had been sitting for the last three years and unfortunately the roof gutters rusted. There are some other areas of rust. He had it for the last 15 years in Hayward, CA. The bottom is rust free. His brother is on disability and can't keep it up. My gain!
I have taken it to a few body shops who weren't interested. Finally found a custom classic restoration shop that is going to do the body work. I received a couple of opinions on the roof. The roof and rails are extremely rusted and they suggested I get a new roof that they will weld on. There are too many rust spots to fix each individually. I have debated the color but it has grown on me. I was also considering a gunmetal grey. Round one of the restoration will include body work and rustproofing the undercarriage and tire wells with POR-15 and chassis black paint. In the future I see 33 inch tires with an OME lift. Interior is pretty solid but I do want to do some soundproofing. I will be honest I don't like how it drinks gas and doesn't go above 65. I plan on building an overlanding-type vehicle. I will keep the build updated I would appreciate input.
