Modern vehicles have electric fan clutches. Wonder if there's a way to retrofit one and use an electric fan temp switch to command fan engagement?

Seems like I’ve read posts about people putting electric fans in. Are you talking about something different?

FYI:
Toyota 10,000 cst is on back order

Where is that kid who can write code for us? Something like this retrofitted and programmed to open at certain times...

I didn't know that was an option. Cool. Honestly that's a no brainer with an Arduino. I mean all you really need is a coolant temp switch but you could get fancy and watch the auto tranny temp is you have one, engage the thing fully when A/C compressor is cycling and so on.

I’ve picked up an arduino kit that I’m learning to use but, I’m not quite there yet, but it does seem like a simple easy solution. Need to weld or adapt a hub for it

Yes, that's how new vehicles engage the clutch fan. If you've noticed a big truck sitting beside you in traffic & suddenly the fan COMES ON, it's because the ECM commanded fan engagement because of coolant temp or AC load. Powering the clutch with the FJ60 AC idle up or a coolant temp switch would be simple. Fitting a clutch to the small space and Toyota WP bolt pattern would be the challenge. The front side of the clutch is easy, use the OEM blade for the clutch.

I don't believe this type of fan clutch can be used with a FJ60 type of system. The water pump on trucks that use this type of fan clutch are in a separate location from than the fan (2017 Chevy Colorado for example). and the fan base is anchored to the block to prevent the wire harness from being torn apart upon engagement.

There may be other configurations i just have not seen it.

Have done some playing with the red hub clutch without much joy, not a very powerful clutch. If it doesn't work for you, consider changing to the aqua hub from the FJ80. It's a solid clutch out of the box, if not enough, changing the fluid to 10K makes it damn powerful. Same spacing, pattern as the earlier F, 2F, etc, have put them on hard to cool FJ40, 60, 62, with good effect. They are commonly available, google; Aisin FCT-049.
Amazon states that the Aisin FCT-049 doesn’t fit my 84 Fj60. Is it because Amazon is going off that is was made for the 80? If it fits my 60, is the install pretty straight forward. What do you all think about removing the fan entirely and replacing it with an electric fan? I’ve heard by doing so frees up some HP.

Sorry for the highjack.

Since the truck is desmogged, disable the HAI during the summer.
Disconnect vac hose at air cleaner door, insert BB in hose and reinstall. Squeeze out BB if cold weather driveability is suffering.

Part of the date code. Read the stamping on all sides for the date. The symbol next to 23 is the corporate mark for Yazaki Vox.
Hi. Can you explain to me a bit better what you stated above. My 60 has been desmohged for years and I live in SOCAL. I drive in the desert during the summer and mountains in the winter. Maybe I should be doing what you mentioned.

The HAI default position is cold ram air. The vac hose applies modulated vacuum to the HAI canister on the aircleaner snorkel to pick up the door and pull hot air off the exhaust manifold. Removing the vacuum source (putting a BB in the hose) leaves the air cleaner in constant cold air mode, which is good for ambient temps above ~60°F.

It will bolt right on.

Sorry for the highjack.

Depending on climate/load, some have had luck with it, but takes a ton of amps to move the amount of air that a good clutch can.

I have a dual battery system.

Im sorry, I need pictures I guess. Because some of what your saying is greek to me.
But thanks for trying to explain it. I'd love to try this mod as most of the time its 70 or higher. This week will be in the 90s.

That's unfortunate. After a day of idling on the trail with giant electric fans running, then there's 2 dead batteries to jump.

Pull the vac hose off the HAI (circled in yellow). Stick a BB or small ball bearing in the end of the hose. To make it look clean, stick the hose back on the HAI nipple. To undo for wintertime, just squeeze the hose to pop the BB out the end, then connect hose as normal.

Bonus: Red circles indicate stuff that can be removed from aircleaner snorkle for a cleaner desmogged appearance.

I removed the 60 air cleaner and installed one from a 62 when I added the snorkle.

mechanical fan puts out like 4800 cfm...not gunna get an electric to do that...

Sent pic because I'm pretty sure I no longer have that sensor vacuum just above the yellow circle you drew.
I have a Weber 32/36 carb so not sure I have what you're depicting in the drawing. I also have a HEI coil from MAF.

that's two steps backwards.
the oe 60 series dissy is regarded as top of the food chain for them.

and well, weber...
