All, I’ve just installed a rebuilt driveline into my 1985 60 and am at a crossroads on how to take the next steps. During my project planning and acquisition phase, I purchased a sniper kit from @FJ60Cam with the intent of installing this on the truck at some point soon. That said, I now have the freshly rebuilt engine in the truck and am wondering if I should get it running with the carburetor first (It ran fine prior to pulling everything out) or do I go for it and install the sniper now?

Here’s how I see it:

Pros for installing the Sniper
1. This would be a once and done approach
2. More afr accuracy for the new engine.
3. No need to run all of the vacuum lines again though the truck is desmogged.

Pros for Installing with carburetor
1. Known running history
2. One less item to debug on startup
3. Wouldn’t need to plumb in the fuel pump in the tank

I already have the o2 sensor bung welded in the exhaust and have the water temp sensor installed in the head for the sniper. I’m leaning to just going for it with the sniper but my cautious side is saying maybe a known quantity with the carb is better?

Would love to get others feedback here. I’m comfortable with all of the installations and I’m also not in a rush.

If the engine was rebuilt (and you trust the work). Install the Sniper. Why wait? You already have it.

I’m 100% team carb. Get a rebuilt Aisan by @mattressking

I’ve our 85,000 miles on my 60 with various carbs. Just stay away from city racer Fuji carbs. They failed me twice.

I’m a fan of not introducing too many unknown variables into an equation.
Personally- I’d get the engine running perfectly with all the original fuel delivery gear (carb) and when it’s running great — then swap in the Sniper EFI. That way, if the engine runs a little wonky with the sniper, you’ll know with certainty that it’s the sniper system and not an engine issue.

But if it runs fine with the carburetor — I don’t see any good reason to install the Sniper at all.
My 2F ran great on the original carburetor design for 30 years. Started fine in cold weather too.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, much appreciated. Since I plan on doing some trips with lots of elevation change, I’ll be switching to the Sniper at some point very soon. I’ve spent a lot of time tuning fuel injection on race cars so for me I have a better comfort level with fuel injection vs. carbs. I still have time to think this through as I get more of the ancillary components mounted.

Cheers, James
