the AMERICAN flag is the nicest touch of all.

man i like the size and simplicity of your trailer.

i am really inspired to build me one, but not out of the military trailer i wanted but a toyota truck bed.

thanks been watching your build.

looks like a nice camping setup, gotta love being outside anytime of the year esp. fall

Thank you all, Gentlemen...gotta say....sat here at work today and more than once found my mind drifting back to a folding chair parked in front of a fine red oak fire, holding a cup of fresh brewed black coffee, the smell of the woods on a brisk autumn morning, and an occasional wiff of homefries and eggs cookin' on the campstove..my God that's livin'...:)

I forgot how good it was to be camping, but never again!

And theres even a coffee mug with a moose on it.....:p. I got that same little table from Cabelas, I need 3 more when were camping.

:eek::eek::eek::eek: 3?!?!....HOLY KER****....now THATS a cookout!!:eek::eek::eek:

sweet trailer its a hotel on wheels. I am not sure if it still qualifies as camping when you bring all the comforts of home lol. Does it feel tippy when your sleeping up there ?

Thank you Nate. She's not a bit tippy. There's jacks that come down from the rear bumper and I picked a set real cheap(5$) for the front...solid as a friggin rock. Even picked up a nice porta-potti for the better 1/2 for 30$ on craigslist last Sunday. That only leaves the shower dileima to solve...and I think I'm going for the stainless steel garden sprayer heated on the stove. I have the 12v water pump which will allow me to fill from a stream if need be.:p

As for hotel..my motto is "just cause were roughin' it don't mean we gotta be uncomfortable" still stands. The driving force behind the design was one of several different problems that all the campers here share;

1) Loading and unloading the gear before and after the trip..

2) Storage of said gear and equipment between trips ..

I think this particular type of build eliminates those issues. I'm not a hardcore,serious off roader like alot the guys that do builds here....but for my purpose I think it should hold up pretty well :beer::cheers:

i know it's an old thread but, i had to drag it back to the top.
Titanpat i love the trailer, i actually had to search alot more than i really wanted to to find this thread but, the important thing is i found it and now im gunna use this as my inspiration rather than my previous bone head idea. https://forum.ih8mud.com/trailer-tech/274159-home-made-toyhauler-type.html

don't worry i don't intend to clone your trailer but i for see me rereading this thread and asking you alot of questions

Geez Sami..I'm sorry you had to look that hard for the stupid thing....lol. Thank you the compliment. Feel free to copy any info or design you like, count me in for any questions you have...I'll try to be as much help as possible (either here or feel free to PM).

I'm currently working on the following: Small fold out awnings for at least 1 side, possibly both (6' x 5') Some sort of panels to finish off the doors at the top and bottom, so that when there open, it will add an addtional 18"of leg room if someone decides to sleep inside, which opens up another can of worms for screens for the door and two windows also. Just got done building 3 LED light bars to illuminate the front and 2 sides. Turning a stainless steel soda canister into a shower unit with it's own propane heat source. Finish plywood the inside(keeping it light as possible)

I really liked Dawsons watertank and pump setup..I have the same kitchen and thought that was slick the way the water line worked out. I do have room on the front rack for a 30 gal tank and for the cooler to fit...and it would only cost about 160$ for the pump and tank to get it hooked up. It's supposed to be nice here in NY tomorrow so I'm gonna unwrap her and start taking measurments. I'm planning on being trout fishing up in Roscoe in two weeks:clap: so I want to get going.

Good luck,Pat

Ok folks..started the awning build!!

Just want to say that I'm not sure why I just don't go buy these from Fernando, he's a true gentleman and has awesome products. I guess it's the same reason we all build things here..

I started out with buying 30+ feet of Sunbrella material off ebay..great price..like 6 bucks a yard. The plan itself is based on kind of a "window shade" construction, minus the automatic rewind.

The pipe is 2" pvc about 6'2" long..the threaded rod is 1/2" x 16". I used Nylok nuts on everything.

The 1st set of pictures is the cutting of the circles, glueing them together with pvc cemnt, bolting them up to rods, and shaped them a bit truer with a belt sander.

I think it would have been easier to run and get a new hole saw that was in better shape for the time it took to prep these, but they turned out tight. The circles were cut out of a material called AZAK..its solid 3/4" pvc. I applied TONS of glue and slid the rods into the tube, making sure everything was well cemented. As an added precaution after dinner I added addtinal screws. When I go to bolt this into the frame I dont want to break the glue joint torqueing it down. Also got material cut, to start the process for connecting the awning pcs.

The awning material only comes in 5' wide, and I dont have a commercial sewing machine, so the plan is to overlap it an inch, contact cement it, and sew it with upholstry thread by hand once the glue sets

The plan is to have adjustable upright poles (Cabelas) at the end of the 80" width, with 2 guy lines to the ground. I have nuts w washers already connected to them to weld on either end of a pc. of 1/2" conduit. Then I'll figure something out that threads to connect the poles to each end to keep the awning taunt. I also bought some 2" wide nylon webbing to sew loops to slide the conduit through. Right now the finished 2" pvc pipe with the hardware weighs in at 6 lbs.

Here's a few of the material. In hindsight I probably would have asked the supplier to mail me a few samples, I thought the color would match my pop up canopy, but leaves a bit to be desired. As usual I'm too GD impatient.... I thought you were supposed to mellow out with age...:bang:

i cant beleive i am just now seeing your build here, great work man. i love everything except the silver paint. but who cares about that? i just read the entire thread in one sitting! great read.

Thanks Mr. Phulcrum...I do appreciate that. I'm planning on getting one side, maybe both (although pretty ambitious) of the awning done this weekend. I have a long weekend coming up and with a little weather luck here in the NY area it might happen.

As usual when we do things, our original design takes a few twist and turns (sometimes unanticipated) which is kinda what's happening right now. I think I have the majority hammered out though, now it's just a case of execution.

Also in the works is a homemade shower unit from a 2-1/2 gallon old canister style fire extingusher...this looks to be very promising

Stay tuned!! :beer::cheers:

Slight Update..Tongue Box

Scored this little treasure off CL...threw a coat of rattlecan black on it, came out pretty nice. It still has to drop down about 1-1/2" and be bolted on. I have to cut out the old frame for the battery box, but it's starting to rain. There should be enough room for the battery, wheel chocks, jack stands, and wind up jack leg.

I could cut about another foot off the whole tongue itself and still clear the box with the jack handle, or get the type that cranks in the front instead of the top and probably lose 2'....just have to order and weld on a new ball catcher thingy ...any thoughts?? I won't be able to jack knife 90 degrees...but does that matter for my application?
