I recently purchased a non running 40 which I’m ecstatic about as it’s been my dream car, but I’m pretty inexperienced when it comes to all this as this is my first project car. I’m looking for some advice on a couple questions. First off I bought the car in California and have since moved it to Utah I would like to remove the California smog just to have a simpler engine bay, is that the right move? And how should I go about doing that? I also need a new water pump, carburetor, and master brake cylinder what do people recommend I get? I will also need all new weather stripping, is there anywhere I can get that for pretty cheap, everything I’ve found so far has been pretty pricey. Thanks so much I’m in need of a good amount of help!

Congratulations! What is the production month & year?

Yea well first thing is when asking for help year/model/market - gets better answers faster.
You could sell that Ca emissions to people in Ca. I'm sure there are threads on de-smogging look for them
There is a classified section to buy and sell parts plus a vendor list - most are good some better than other besure and consider price plus shipping as well as is it OEM or china aftermarket.
Download manuals free here Land Cruiser Factory Service Manuals (FSMs) - https://www.cruisercult.com/factory-service-manuals

You should decide if you want to be a purest (very expensive) or just want to have an awesome off road rig you can work on with simple tools. My 72 came to me in 82. Rochester 2 bbl, Delco Dizzy. About 84 the cast iron exhaust manifold cracked in half, I was given a used header - its still there. The carb hasn't been touched since like 2005. I just swapped in an Amoron $120 china Delco and now Elsie is running great again.

No brain boxes, straight mechanical advance dizzy, $10 electric fuel pump. I just made a new oiled foam element ($20) for the air cleaner- the one I bought in 83 finally rotted away.

I’m definitely leaning towards making it as stock as possible and daily driving it, while also wanting to take it on some trails

I also forgot to add I will probably need all new hoses as these ones are insanely stiff and old, is there a place I could buy all new hoses or do I just have to buy them all separately?

There are several vendors to choose from in the list. Not everyone will have all the stuff all the time - most track their inventory so you will before you order. Some stuff is NoLongerAvailable or only as rebuilt or aftermarket. Read carefully, call and ask first to be sure is the safe way.

a lot of times I will do a generic Internet search for the item. ‘fuel resistant rubber hose’ for example. There’s a ton of vendors and manufacturers out there. That sounds like something you could buy in bulk. Also local hardware stores like Ace have a pretty good selection of hose sold by the foot.

The carb @charliemeyer007 identified would not be my first choice for a rig that is going to be desmogged. A 75-80 non-US Aisan carb, sometimes referred to as a 61010 or 61011 would be the best choice. Behind that would be a 75-77 stock Aisan carb that has been properly rebuilt and desmogged. Third would be a properly rebuilt and desmogged 78. All of these will fit your current carburetor linkage, fuel lines and air cleaner without modifications.

The 61012 non-US market carb is a popular choice among many on this forum because it also comes without provisions for smog and is available in aftermarket versions for a fraction of the cost of a genuine Aisan that has been professionally rebuilt. Being designed for a newer vehicle with a shorter valvetrain, It is about 1/2” shorter than the 75-80 carbs, so you will need a spacer to seal your air cleaner to it. They also do not have a provision for a fuel return line, which your truck currently has. So you would need to either drill your own hole in the air horn for it, or delete the return line. I personally don’t favor drilling the carburetor.

I occasionally stock the non-US 61010 and 61011 carburetors, rebuilt and modified for enhanced performance. I believe I currently have one of each rebuilt and ready to go. I also routinely desmog the US market carbs. You are welcome to call me at the shop to follow up. Disclaimer: I am definitely not your cheapest option. Thankfully, many here have found the value sufficient.

You've got the "simple smog" and it doesn't look like the california specific one...probably federal. If you were to remove it....I personally would store it and not sell it. The rig can sell (if you eventually sell) to more places with smog components installed. Obviously there are different opinions on smog....but I think all of us have reconsidered decisions after we let something slip from our hands.

Got a couple links for you:

Looking for part #s for your truck? ToyoDIY.com - https://www.toyodiy.com/parts/g_U_1978_TOYOTA_LAND%20CRUISER_FJ40LV-KCJA.9.html
I think that link should be accurate, mine is oct '77 (we both have '78 model years I believe). Looking under your hood, you have lots of the same bits I do, although I can't tell if your regulator is a 3-wire or a 6-wire.

Chasing electrical issues? Coolerman's Electrical Schematic and FSM File Retrieval - https://globalsoftware-inc.com/coolerman/fj40/schematics/
Check the '78 section of course. I 2nd the recommendation from @65swb45 re: de-smogged Aisan carb (I have the same unit), if you are going for something stock-ish and you are de-smogging.

Save that smog equipment / remove it carefully! It's in high demand on the ebay for folks doing factory resto's / trying to get their truck up to smog standards. It can help you pay for some parts down the line, of which you will need many :)

Nice rig! I need to replace all of my weather seals on my 72 also. Here's what I'm getting from City Racer. I would include part numbers but your truck is a later model than mine and will need different seals in several places. Obviously, you have Ambulance doors instead of the tailgate/hatch setup that I have, different doors, etc. I don't want to steer you down the wrong path on that. FJ40Jim on here (Jim Chenoweth) rebuilds carbs. He has a store Toyota Land Cruiser specialty parts - https://tlcperformance.com/ and has all the goodies you need to desmog your truck. He is famous for his rebuilt carbs and he rebuilt mine (set to Aussie specs), and my desmogged engine and my whole '78 FJ40 actually! It has an aluminum tub/cowl/windshield frame and any other available aluminum panels and old style doors. It has a '77 engine and we started out with a different rolling frame that belonged to someone whose wife told him to get it out of the garage. A Frankenstein Cruiser for sure since the only parts that came from my "old" Cruiser are the seats, gauges, and part of the rollcage. Jim and I have been friends for over 30 years.

FWIW,

I think for most vehicles OEM weatherstripping is the best. There are at least a few vendors who sell aftermarket weatherstripping for FJ40s, but the quality can be described as "iffy". For example, despite what their website claims, I've never seen a positive review of the stuff CCOT (Cool Cruisers of Texas) sells.

I'm generally a fan of City Racer. His website lists many OEM Toyota parts, (usually at good prices) but he doesn't sell OEM weatherstripping. I emailed him about the City Racer weatherstripping vs OEM, and he sent a very detailed explanation why.

Like you, I need to replace my weatherstripping and I'll be using 100% City Racer. His explanation convinced me it's superior to OEM Toyota.

Congratulations on your purchase, and welcome to the forum!
