I'm supposed to be picking up a '72 FJ55 in Tucson later this month and need to know a guess-timate on weight. Engine/tranny removed, I think 31" tires, no interior. Basically it's the frame, the body, suspension, tires and glass. I'm just trying to figure out if I can roll this on my trailer and tow it with the wife's van or if I need to get a tow bar. Just not sure how well the tires will hold up to a 700+ mile trip (back to Central Ca.)
Thanks
Drew

If you mean can you by yourself roll it onto a trailer NO if you mean with a friend yes but youll probably need to get it moving a bit on a flatter area first. Not sure of the weight I'm going based on my own experience of rolling one around. For a guess on weight take the stock weight minus about 600 for the engine another 200 or so for a 4 speed and tcase and probably like 500 for the seats and misc other interior stuff. I dont think I would pull it with any van though especially if their is much in the way of mountains in front of you.

i remember about 4800# on mine when it was mostly stockish, so take off about 1k for stuff its not got and you should be right around the weight of the average camry type sedan.;) last time i went to the landscape supply it clocked in at almost 6200#, that was with my little offroadable trailer and i dont think thats much over 300#. not that you wanted to know but just for the heck of it i figure my piggie in average driving trim is around 5800# or so. dont wanna venture a guess when going camping.

FJ55 Shell

The 55 shell is pretty light. Jon (project manager at Ironpigoffroad) and I put my FJ55 on a tow dolly by ourselves. He even bet me that his wife's little Saturn SUV would be able to tow it. I wanted to use my Tundra, but he insisted. The SUV was only rated for 3000lbs and it towed fine.

My pig is just a shell, but it has FJ80 axles and 37" tires on steel wheels.

There are some pictures at the bottom of my webpage.

if you still have the drivers door plate. It should give you the weight.
I do not know if that is the dry weight or not.

Mine says 5,743 lbs.

Thanks all for the quick replies, I should have been more specific. Getting it on the trailer isn't the issue, I was just concerned with overrall weight when it comes time to tow. As long as the shell, frame, windows and suspension are less than about 2800 lbs. I should be fine. I've towed almost 4000lbs. in the past but it was for a much lower sitting vehicle. I have only seen pictures of it so I have no idea if it has the VIN plates on it or not.

I dont remember the exact number..... but when I had to get my 1974 FJ55 weighed in at the military base as well as local marine scales..... it came in around 4100lbs with am almost empty tank of fuel.
