As a rookie, I think I bit off a little more than I can chew! I just bought a 1977 FJ40, my very first 40, with the agreement that I would finish a few things that the owner was not able to finish. It was a restoration project so all the wiring is back in place but not all connected. I have looked at the Toyota Repair Manual and online, but truthfully, none of it make much sense to me. This is my first time really working on a vehicle and I don't have the money to get it done by someone else. Does anyone have pictures or easy to read diagrams for connecting the wiring?

Anything will help! I live in Wilmington, NC and would be happy to provide the beer if someone can come by and take a look!

Thank you.

James

Thanks for this man. Do you happen to know of anything else? I am having a hard time understanding it because I think I am missing some parts. Do you, (or anybody reading) happen to have any pictures?

Great idea! That would be extremely helpful.

Wilmington, NC.

Thank you.

you are making a classic mistake. you are looking at the whole picture and getting overwealmed. if you take your time and look around on here and ask people for help and just tackle one thing at a time you will be fine. first thing you need to do is take a deep breath and drink a beer. or you can do what i do and sit in the drivers seat with a beer and make vroom vroom noises till the old lady comes out in the garage and asks me what the hell i am doing.

wiring

Coolerman has his harness out and is rebuilding it ---Im sure there will be some good info there although it is a different year than yours

x2 on weez440 comments--actually it is pretty easy

Just start with one thing like hooking up the fuse box, or gauge cluster and work your way through it

Ask away and you'll get plenty of help

The key to it is the color codes on the schematic for the wires ---have you got that far yet?

X 3.1417 on Weez's comment! Break the job down into sections on the rig and go from there. (Engine compartment, lighting, dash, interior, etc...) It gets easier that way and if you start scratching your head, do a search or three on here and I guarantee someone has already been through the issue and posted a fix for it.

Now before your next post, go take a few pics of your rig and post them up. It'll give you a good place to start your build. Besides the bezel police require all noobs to post up a pic of their bezels. If I were you I'd make sure the fat side is up to avoid their snarky comments! If you don't know what a bezel is, check the FAQ!

Welcome to the sickness.

or you can do what i do and sit in the drivers seat with a beer and make vroom vroom noises till the old lady comes out in the garage and asks me what the hell i am doing.

So then you say "I can't get the lights working" she grabs the multimeter and sorts it while you get another beer. I wondered where I was going wrong.

As said before break it down and look at diagram for the the wire colors you want for a particular part. Then look for those wires where the parts should be, black and yellow near the coil etc.

You need also to be aware the same colors might be used for different circuits.

Take photos, some of the sad sick people here can often identify connections from photos just by the location. Get a writing pad and make notes. If nothing is shorted to earth you should be able to get circuits working one at a time, lights, engine, gauges, etc.

Don't expect that you will just need to plug everything in and have it all work, and don't worry when you need to ask a few questions, plently of people here will be able to "talk "it through with you.

Weez440- had a very good laugh at your comment and it helped me to relax. Thanks man! (My wife loved it as well). I am going to post a few pictures and ask for some help from my new FJ family...

OK. Here's the deal. Attached are a few pictures. Thanks to all of you for your help.

I think that I must have a few parts missing. You'll notice that the master C is missing- repalacing it, along with the air intake in these pics, but does it look like I need anything else? I have a few electrical female "ports" but no male to attach them to. As it stands now, my headlights and high beams work, but only the left front turn and no rear turn. Only left rear "yellow" light comes on when I turn on the light and no right rear anything. None of my gauges are working, other than the parking break light, however, the parking brake does not work! The high beam indicator works, but nothing else- including the wipers. They started to work, but then stopped.

The battery is new, along with a new alt. The fuse box got very hot, so I figured that the wiring is obviously not going on a loop.

Please go easy on me. This is my first time with any vehicle!

Thanks!

Pic 1- Front left near head light. What does that attach to?
Pic 2- overhead view. Master C is being replaced and need new air intake. Other than that- does it look like I am missing anything?
Pic 3- front right near head light. What does it attach to?

glad i could help james. i actually worked on one thing at a time and after a year it is amazing how far i came along. next on the list is brakes and i have all the parts coming for that, then it is wiring as it has no blinkers back or front, i am putting that off to the side as i HATE wiring. after them two items then it is fun stuff like roll cage winch and basically bolt on stuff as all the mechanical stuff will be done. and may i suggest sneaking in something fun with the boring. for instance i redid my front end like center arm and tie rod ends which was not very much fun. the next thing i did was painted it which to me was fun as you can see a big transformation. pick away and before you know it you will be getting things spanked off the list. :)

Pic 4- another pic of the front right near headlight. Notice the missing wire connections!
Pic 5- I have no idea! Looks important though! I this looks to be connectec (or not connected to the starter, which does not make sense because it fires up nicely)
Pic 6- Right rear light. Nothing works.

I have about 10 more pictures with questions. Anyone know how I can upload them? I think my attachment space is all used up!

So I tried to put the rest of my pictures to the album "FJ pics" but I am not sure how you fellas can access it or if it works. I am such a mess! Any suggestions?
