Sounds like you made the right decision!! If you arent sure about your welder or skills get it done right the first time. Peace of mind is priceless!! Mark:beer:

thanks again Mark. Yeh, I'm not sure if I can get a solid weld to the axle housing but I'm sure I can weld the brackets on the frame. Then on to the electrical!

Hey Roman

Let me know if you need any help. Most of that you should be able to do yourself, or, you "should" be able to do yourself.

Sweet Ride! You shouldn't have to worry about that axle problem again with those mods. I wouldn't try to use a 110 welder to weld on the axle housing, and if you're gonna have that done have them put on the frame brackets also. Where are you at? I'm in Lucerne,Ca and would help you out with the welding if you are close.

thanks Straightjacket. I'm in SF bay area (kinda far).

just read your story. Sorry about your problems with your first trip. Good luck. Ever make it up to Napa give me a pm and come taste some wine. I would love to see your 40.

first of all, since you only bought it 8 months ago, has it occurred to you that maybe you need some seat time wheeling this thing before you go onto hard trails like the Rubicon ? I mean, which novice skater tries the quadruple toe-loop on the first ice

and why would you have a buddy drive YOUR rig on the first outing  and honestly, if he can't see what's in front of him, why doesn't he get out of the truck and look

sorry for ragging on you - but obviously, this was not a material/technical problem but driver/owner error on many fronts...

someone had to say it, may as well be the blunt German :meh:

here would be my recommendation on what to do:

I hear Ya and I appreciate it. The driver was the previous owner and good friend who's wheeled the FJ40 20+ times through Rubicon BUT he also did it before the spring over and the 35" swampers. The reason I was not driving the 40 was because I was behind the 40 in the FJ Cruiser with wife and everyone's camping gear.

It was a freak incident. In retrospect, when we looked at this stump, if it was 2" lower it would have cleared the axle. When he gave it some gas it was so minor that the tires didn't even chirp, we were right behind the 40 and just heard the snap and the pieces fly.

I've done Rubicon a couple of times so I'm still a novice. I've seen people thrashing their rigs trying to get through places but my buddy babied as much as anyone possibly could. He didn't want to even drive it because I just finished putting in all the work but there was no other choice. We had lots of gear and too many people to fit in the 40.
