I'm in the common dilemma of trying to find A/T tires for my stock steelies. My FJ40 has a 2.5" lift, so was ideally looking for 33x10.5/15 tires. My only 33" option appears to be the BFG 33x10.5/15 AT, but wanted to try something different this time (while sticking to All Terrains). There are tons of A/T if I downsize to 31", so was hoping to see some photos of lifted FJ40's with 31" tires. Show me what you got!

I've tried searching.... Found a similar thread for the FJ60, but not for FJ40.

I'll say it now: I don't want to swap out my stock steelies for 16" wheels, which I know opens up a world of options in 33" tires. Also don't want M/T tires, as I do mostly on-road driving.

Thanks!

Hi All:

You could try looking for 33X9.5R15 tires. These would fit just fine on the stock 15 X 5.5 inch steel wheels.

IIRC, Les Schwab might be able to source some off-brand 33X9.5R15 AT tires.

Regards,

Alan

Sounds familiar. I was looking for 33's also. The 9.50's have gone the way of the dinosaur, and the 33/10.50s seem to be headed that way. I finally convinced myself that the 31/10.50/15 was the way to go. They are easy to find, fairly inexpensive and for my needs, fit the bill. My truck is used mostly as a hunting- exploring rig as well as a daily driver. I have sagged 2.5 Rancho springs and extended shakles with 15" stock steelies.

Here's my 42 with both 31s and 33s:

Sorry, this is the best pic I have of the 31s.

And the 33x10.50s on stock steelies.

Another option for ATs in 33x10.50 is the Toyo ATs. Personally, I like the look of the 33s much better than the 31s. They just fit the wheel well better. By the way, I have a 2.5" OME.

Thanks for the photos everyone. Nice looking 40's!

Made some phone calls to Les Schwab and Discount Tire, as well as extensive web searching, and nothing but the BFG A/T available in 33x10.5/R15. No 33x9.50's either, from any manufacturer. Same goes for 32". At least in A/T.

Now leaning towards a 31" to broaden my options. I really like the look of the 33" BFG A/T, but I've seen a number of recent reviews that say these tires aren't lasting as long as they used to.

I see other options... falkens and yoko's (Note these are 32 x 11.50) both are AT though. My friend had the Yoko's and loved them.

Also I used to have the 32x1150 BFG MT KM2's and found they weren't that bad on the road (I daily drive the truck as well) If you can find somewhere to get them sipped (spelling?) they can be just fine for in rain ect. Also the KM2's are much quieter on the street then the old bfg mt's I had.

Toshi,

Thanks for looking around. I don't think an 11.5" will fit my stock steelies, though. I thought 10.5" was already a stretch. Am I wrong?

Do you recall how many miles you got out of your BFG KM2's? How did your siped KM2's do on icy roads?

I agree that the KM2's are pretty quiet on the road. I do a fair amount of highway driving and the tire noise is the least of the noise. 10.5 is a stretch but it works fine. I don't see 11.5 working.

Here is my 31 10.5 15s on 8 in rims and a 2.5 in HellCreek lift.

Working yes... safe I dunno. I ran the 32x11.5's for about 3 years without issue (On and off road) on stock rims. Not saying you should do it... Just saying its possible :hillbilly:

As for how long they lasted I don't know... they got stolen... I now have 35x12.5 KM2's (Did a spring over). I've put about 10000 miles on them so far and they're still looking good.

As far as icy roads I don't run my truck in the winter here in Ontario (Too much salt). And when I was in BC we got all of maybe 2 snow days a year. So I can't really comment.

For the money you're about to spend on tires you could also look at prices for new steel rims. American racing used to have some relatively cheap black/white steel rims.

I can say that on my other ontario truck I was running 31x10.5" Toyo O/C AT's and that they lasted me about 55 000 km (Very bald coming off) and where pretty good on ice/snow through the winter (Until they got down to the last few mm of tread :flipoff2: )

These are M/T. I wanted the "Hmmmm" back. Got them at Discount Tire. Have had them for about 3 months. VERY pleased. My FJ40 hasn't seen the mud since my high school and college days in it. But, it did back then....

For those posting photos of your 31x10.5's, what tires are you running (brand/model), how do you use them, and how do you like them?
