Nice looking 40. Not sure about you and trucks with rear fender damage. I am begining to think your jinxed or something!;)

Keep the pics coming. Wish I was closer to check it out in person!

Thanks, PF. I'll be adding more to this thread. How's your fender rebuild coming along on your '60? E-mail me some more pics.

Coming right along!

One thing about that glass filter: Be very careful when trying to remove or tighten the gas line fittings. The top is made from pot metal and is VERY easy to crack. Ask me how I know....

Thanks for the warning. I pulled it off using 2 wrenches. I now have a new filter element for it. I'll put it back together and reinstall it this evening.

Feel free to encourage me to be patient !!

Patient, well I bought one in June and charged the battery and ran it for 10 seconds, and of course there is my 73 OE Msoft top I bought in 94 and haven;t even started that one yet. These are both complete put together cruisers, not parts vehicles. I do keep them out of the weather and in the dry climit of AZ they will keep. Just remember these old cruisers are like fine wine they only get better with age. How's that for encourgement.

Nice find by the way.

Greetings from Whitefish, MT. Cool find.

Man I thought at first that it was the same one I sold last month. I had a 9/69 titled as a 70. Was same color green although had a little more rust:). It was my first rig. Traded up to a 78.

Good Day!

Josh

Great find !! I lived in Billings back in the 70's and 80's, can you still go wheeling in the rimrocks up by the airport? Anyway, enjoy the 40, you've got a great start :cheers:Alex

I siphoned most of the old gasoline out. There is a small amount in the bottom that I can't siphon, and the plug on the bottom is frozen. I'm gonna add 5 gallons of fresh gas to the half gallon or so that is in the tank and go with it. Our city has a nice convenient way to dispose of old gasoline. :) I think I'll put some of that Marvel oil into the gas tank, too.

The old oil filter was stuck tight, so I drove a screwdriver sideways into it and tried to wrench it off. No go. The air cleaner was in the way. I removed those two big bolts that hold the air cleaner assembly on to the block. After I got 'em off, I realized that those were head bolts! Yikes! I hope I didn't ruin anything by taking 'em off. I muscled that old oil filter off (finally) and reinstalled everything. The replacement oil filter (Toyota OEM) is about half the size of the one I removed.

I drained out all the oil that was in it. Five quarts - and dang but that is a huge drain plug! I had to put seven quarts of oil back in before it registered on the dipstick.

Tomorrow, I'm adding gas and a bit of coolant. Then, I'll connect the battery, hold my breath, turn the key, and we'll see what happens.

Wish me luck.

Luck I look forward to hearing how it goes.

Suggestion. Disconect the line going to the fuel filter and let it hang down to get the remaining junk out. The last bit of gas will contain the majority of crud that will cause you greef by clogging your new fuel filter and carb. By draining the old junk out and then adding some more gas to get as much as you can out before you start.

Hope it helps. Good luck!

PS. I got the air working on the 60! now I can drive in blissful cold. :)

Yes! Yesyesyes!!!

This morning, I put six gallons of fresh gas in it, along with a few ounces of Marvel. I hand cranked the motor some more to pump out some of the old gas in the lines. Then, I put everything back together and turned the key.

It took about 45 seconds of cranking and pumping, but her will to live and breathe prevailed!!

Chug, chug, chug - what a sweet sound!

It runs, drives, shifts, stops. It runs great. Except for the missing taillights, I could drive it to the store!

If you haven't already, you'll want to change the diff fluids before you drive too far. The pop-up breather vents have a habit of sticking open. You'll probably find chocolate milk in your diffs.

My boys like this thing. Here's me and my oldest:

I'm not sure how you knew this, but you are/were exactly right. I drained both diffs last night. The stuff that came out resembled chocolate milk! I put in new gear oil.

Tomorrow, a local muffler shop is gonna re-do the exhaust system for me. It is in pretty tough shape.

I need to do some brake work, too. I'm still trying to decide which way to go. I'll probably end up doing the disc brake thing.

Could not find the original tool kit in the truck. I went back to see the PO. He had it in a box in his driveway. He told me I could take it. It is not 100% complete, but I'm happy to have it!
