Great, now I'm dreading that bak bolt even more..... me vs. the bolt.
At the end of the day, its still just a bolt though.... or maybe a bracket... You'll get it.

Just make sure that when you reassemble everything that you put a shorter bolt back in so that it will be super easy to remove it later down the road if you ever need to get to something below or behind the pump.

Think of it this way,.. at least you bought a new pump right off the bat instead of attempting multiple rebuilds yourself, then sending it to a shop for multiple rebuilds of both the pump and gearbox, (leaving a shop full of Toyota 4x4 mechanics scratching their heads trying to figure out whats going on), only to eventually break down and pony up for a new pump that solved all the problems. My steering issues took an entire summer to figure out haha. I'm glad its all working now....

Man, front 2 bolts on the steering pump come off real easy. But I can't for the life of me get the return hose loose so I can drain the reservoir. Looking on sor.com etc I see that hose is discontinued. Also reading on here that its a typical hose and I could get a replacement anywhere.

Can anyone confirm that?

This bugger here. It's cracking so I guess it doesn't matter much if I cut the thing off.

Ok, day 2 of the PS Pump Replacement is behind me. Got quite a bit done. I was getting a little too verbose yesterday trying to capture every step on here but that's probably pretty boring to look through so I'll skip a lot of the photos and just include the highlights.

First I said the heck with it and split the hose to get it off of the pump, let the reservoir drip into a funnel which dripped into a bucket.

The whole air intake/air cleaner was completely in the way of ever getting to the rear bolt on the pump so I had to remove that.

Looking at the engine this way makes me really jealous of the de-smogged 2Fs...

This odd, radiator-looking hose was in the way. I'd been looking forward to getting at this thing - the kink in it really bothered me. I'm honestly not even sure what it's for.

Then when I removed it I see that it was hiding a rusted and rotten broken end - I'll have to learn what that part is, and what that's all supposed to be doing.

At last! The dreaded rear bolt! IT was in there pretty good - I started to round the one end of the bolt so I figured I'd remove the reservoir so I had a little more room.

IMG_9665.jpg

This is a good view of how much fluid must have leaked out over time - very gunky.

IMG_9666.JPG

I finally got the bolt turning - I was super-excited! Then or course, it eventually hit the exhaust manifold... Ugh. The bracket has so much gunk built up that I decided to call it a night and look in the books to try and determine where the bracket bolts are and how much extra work that's gonna be.

I tried to keep turning the bold, jiggling the power steering pump around. It kept teasing me - its so close to being off! I could tell I was just stripping the end of the bolt - pretty frustrating. So I decided to call it a night and just clean up a few parts for the replacement pump.

The "shiny" made me feel better after being defeated by the bolt. lol

Some may differ with me on this...to each his own I guess. But there are few broke things on a cruiser that can't be fixed when it comes to things like, well, the BVSV's. If you have the money and never want to worry about a part then more power to you for ordering brand new OEM, but there's a $2 route I'd trust just as much that involves widening the hole where the old plastic broke off with a drill, buying a vacuum hose fitting (I.e. a "T" adapter or something) and cutting one of the leads off, then JB weld the new plastic lead into the drilled hole. I only say this because what parts aren't discontinued on these trucks are becoming more and more expensive...Of course, a line must be drawn somewhere between this and duct taping a broken leaf. just food for thought next time your about to put big money into a brand new part.

EDIT:

Nice progress on the pump! You'll get it tomorrow. That radiator lookin hose connects the air pump to the air injection rail...all part of the smog mess. something about putting fresh air in the cylinders to match the recirculated exhaust gas (EGR) IIRC.

This is all the more reason that the de-smog is becoming more and more appealing. Definitely going to be looking at performing that after I get a few other things done on here. I can then skip worrying about 30% of the parts in here - most of them being brittle and discontinued.

Old rubber hoses are always a pain to remove, but since you can replace it with any rubber tubing that most auto parts stores sell in bulk, go ahead and slice the tubing vertically from the top until just past where the metal barb ends. It should come off fairly easily after that, but be ready for the fluid spillage with an old water bottle or something.

EDIT: lol... If i would have read one more post this reply would not have been necessary.

...The pump bracket is under all that delicious smog spaghetti. There are 3 bolts holding it to the block IIRC.

After what seemed like hours of jiggling the pump and the bolt, trying to hold the bolt with pliers while forcefully pulling at the pump, and performing many other combinations of abusive acts against the rear bolt. I finally decided to look at the bracket itself.

I read on here "removing the bracket is straightforward" - like hell it is. I see the 2 front bolts - ok, they're not bad. I see the 3 bolts on the side of the bracket - no way I'm getting at those!

Back to the bolt. And re-reading lots of Power Steering pump removal threads. And staring sadly at the bolt thinking.

Finally, I give in and follow the suggestion of just hitting the bolt with a Sawzall. Why the heck not at this point? So I visit the neighbor and borrow his Sawzall. I start cutting the bold and the saw cuts the bolt in like 5 seconds. I pull the bolt out and remove the pump! Yes!

Victory!!!

Note that this photo was taken after numerous sprays and wipes with degreaser. It was pretty ugly down there.

Next:
* Removing the Air/Water Pump belt
* replacing the power steering return hose
* replacing BVSV #1

So I took one of the intact power steering pump bolt overs to the auto parts store and got a small pack of matching bolts. I'll attempt to chop the bolt down to a shorter length.

Managed to get the Air Pump belt off too.

Struggled with the BVSV #1 off - what a bugger! I moved the upper radiator hose out of the way - still no way to get enough movement on the thing with risking slicing my wrist on the fan shroud.

So the weekend is behind me and I've learned that I am completely obsessed with working on the FJ60 and the more I learn, the more I want to do to the truck. It's truly an illness.

I'm torn between just finishing this job (meaning finishing the PS Pump and BVSV then putting everything back together) and getting the truck back on the road or diving in completely. This would mean replacing EVERYTHING a piece at a time until things are completely ship shape under the hood.

I know the truck needs a valve job (though it can wait), it has some hoses I haven't replaced (they can wait). I haven't done the fan shroud mod. I do have the fan shroud unbolted right now, finding the BVSV is being really stubborn and the fan shroud is probably going to slice the hell out of me before I get that darn thing unbolted.

Then I discover the fan is a total pain in the a$$ to get off - its those 4 bolts right? Ugh...

Anyone know what this hose is for?

Goes up to the bottom of the EGR Modulator...it's the circular diaphragm with the "P, Q, R" hoses attatched to it. You'll find it attatched to your air horn by a little metal clip...probably undid itself when you removed the air horn without you realizing it.

Be very careful of doing this... remember you are in Clark County and they require smog on anything newer than 1982 so you will have to deal with the inspector. That is unless you live just outside of Clark or can "register" the truck somewhere that does not have smog requirements, one of the benefits of not living in Clark County or Washoe County.

Look on here as I remember there was someone that talked about notching the bracket at that one damn bolt for that would always get caught between the PS pulley and the bracket. Get yourself a short, stubby ratchet and socket to fit the bolt and you can get your hand in there with the bolt and get it back on... Lots of finagling, cursing and awkward positions but you can get it on as I went through the same thing (my PS pump leaked, got a new one from a MUD member and it started leaking in a few months, ended up finding a 60 at the local PicknPull that had a good pump). If my pump ever dies again I will be swapping over to a Saginaw conversion and calling it good.

Thanks by the way - I see you're also in Vegas - let me know if you ever wanna do Landcruiser stuff

Im up for that if we can get the schedules to work out. Im usually off mon/tue. You know how LV is everybody is working on their own time zone! Although yesterday got some free time and changed out the plugs, wires, fuel pump etc. what a difference running on 6 cylinders vs. 5 and with an instant fuel supply :)

I work more bank-ish hours - it would still be cool to compare Cruisers etc

Still have to do my plugs - this PS Pump project has spiraled out into more than I bargained for lol - I got the pump off, but I can see that now I HAVE to get that bracket off to put the new rear bolt on.

My attempts to cut a bolt cleanly with a sawzall and holding the bolt aren't exactly working out lol. Its either to short to screw into the pump, or too long to fit between the manifold and the bracket to go back in...

Gotta go buy a 3/4" wrench to get the BVSV1 off - at least it looks that's the size. 5/8 too little, 7/8 too big...

Im off this week with inlaws in town for the holiday :bang: so if you need an extra set of hands I could probably tear myself away. Cant offer you too much technical help as its all new to me also. I have been struggling for two days to budge my EGR cooler and pipe to get at an exhaust leak. Desmog or a V8 look more attractive every day.....I would like to drive another 60 for comparison mine is the only one I've ever been in and I would love to know if its quirks are fj60 quirks or specific to mine. I will PM you my cell #
