my first FJ build

I'm goin for a sleeper look, keep it classy... I almost had one as my first vehicle, but since it had a corvette motor in it, my mom said it was too fast and shot me down.

updates - took the grille, hood, radiator, and radiator support out to get to the motor easier. If i can get that stupid water neck, thermo housing thing for cheaper than $70, i'll run the orig motor at least for a while. Anyone know where i can get one?

so today I took the rear drums off to see about what i can do as far as a disc brake conversion. The oil in the rear end smelled horrible and was about the consistency of chocolate syrup, so that had to go. I had to spend more time cleanin up my garage so i could turn the FJ around so i can get to the engine easier. hopefully i'll get more time to work on it tomorrow...

Build it however it suits you, don't let anyone sway you to keep it original if it's not what you want. I learned long ago that everyone likes to tell you how to spend your money and how to build your stuff.

same color of my first one(a 1969)when I was 16, 20 years ago, same original color of the one I have now(a 72), unfortunately just the interior, as a PO decided a hunting rig should be spray painted camo. It would seem a pity to swap out an untested motor without giving it a small chance. Have fun and good to see I'm not the only Rookie! It is a little intimidating to throw thoughts out to such a group of experience and knowledge, but I have spent the last year reading info off this site and you will find more here collectively than anywhere else in the world, so build forth.

Nice Rig and welcome! :flipoff2:

I will echo what other have already said about keeping it original. Stock, unmolested rigs are hard to find and when cared for they're quite valuable. 40's that have been modded, hacked, thrashed and generally abused are common (in a relative way). Mine fit into the later category when I got it and I was too green to know any better anyway. Maybe you should buy a second one to mod and restore the 67? Just a suggestion...:p

Have fun!

nice find :D

post some photos of the engine compartment :D

If you have a big windowed carb and do not want it I buy it from you :D
Also, if you have the tool wrap in the tool box, i be interested in that too :D

congrats man :D

well i took more stuff of the motor to try to get the frame to a point i can get it sand blasted and cleaned up. I can't get the stupid bolts off the exhaust pipe, so i'm thinkin the grinder will fix that with the quickness. I also painted the rear diff cover in primer since it was all cleaned up.

Destin, i'm lookin to sell as much of the old motor as possible, so shoot me an offer on the carb and it'll be yours. i have no idea what these parts are worth, so please don't rip me off, plus a new motor is not gonna be cheap...

thanks for all the compliments and here's some pics of the progress.

ok, i dont know where the pictures are...

actually guys that heater is stock for 67' mine has the exact same heater. In fact that cruiser looks just like my 67' did. Great find, I hope you got her cheap. Only paid $800 for my 67'. IMHO I would keep her close to stock, nothing beats a mostly original rig. Have fun on the rebuild.

what year are those plates? - out of curiosity

(they look late 70's/early 80's based on the big 'TEXAS' across the top)

Ya, i want the stock look, but with updated technology as i plan on running it as my daily driver. I got the gas tank out and drained the oil and it smelled like there was gas mixed in with it, so the whole engine would have needed a rebuild anyways. the inside of the tank is in really good condition, i can still see the galvanized design on the metal, so aside from just some varnishy buildup it should be good to use. I have a ton of OEM F engine parts if anyone is interested such as fuel lines, filter with glass bulb, distributer.... Pm me if you need something

the plates are from '75 and have the 75 stamped into them which is cool. if money gets too tight, i might have to let em go if the price is right...

sold the carb and the block is in negotiations. Progress is kind of slow, but i did buy a roll bar out of a 78, so i at least have protection when i get the thing on the road. I also pulled the heater and cleaned it up and painted it. i think it needs a coat of clear to protect it, but i'm happy with the way it looks. i went with black b/c i want to make all the brackets on the truck black. I think it'll look clean if the truck is either red or silver. i can't seem to get the steering column off the steering box b/c its a 3 on the tree, and i can't find any info. Also, I'm wanting an automatic trans so i want to know how to set the shifter up. should i go through the floor or how can i do a column shift? i dont even know what trans i'm getting, but they should all be similar in set up right?

ok, i've been thinking about things and came up with some (probably dumb)questions:
1. is there an axle that i can just swap in to the front of my '67 that has disc brakes? as in what model/years...
2. if i can't swap in an axle, can i just build brackets to do discs on the front like the rears that are commonly done? pros/cons...
3. How do i disconnect the steering column and 3 on tree shifter so i can start working on a power steering install?

post 76 FJ40s have discs and are a direct swap. There's brackets too, you have a weaker axle but I have no problems with Monte Carlo calipers (others will disagree but I've road raced with them without issues so I trust them).

ok, things are going slow with the FJ b/c i need to pull the body off and take it up to my dad in Austin so i can start working on the frame and getting the motor out and suspension and steering all fixed up. I did strip down the hood to bare metal and primed it up with a rattle can. i think when we go to get the thing painted that primer is gonna need to go, so that sucks. anyways, here's some pics:

so the build is going to be put on hold for about a year b/c i'm going to Haiti to do Relief work with a company called Samaritan's Purse. The truck is going into storage while i'm gone, but on the up side, i'll be putting away money to sink into it when i get back.
