Hi All,

Still waiting for 44... Update yesterday said they hoped to fire it up before the end of day, yesterday... But, realize, I am retired and patient... I've assured them I would rather they do it right than rush thru it so they can get to someone else.

Once they have it running, they will take it to the muffler shop... When they get it back, they will drive it a bit... So, I'm patiently waiting...

In the meantime, I have a couple of picture my son-in-law took, while he and Dianna (my Bride of 45+ years) were on their 12 mile hike.

This picture is my goal for our Conejos trip next year... I want to be able to make this hike... I'd really like to see this in person!!

This is Dianna and Gunner at the waterfall... I'm looking forward to seeing the waterfall too

And THIS picture shocked me... I didn't realize there were Grizzleys in the area!! Ok, so it's a Marmot ... Look at it on a cell phone, if you want to see a Grizzley...

Beautiful photos.
Killed by a bear! While camping?
Well glad we don't have that problem here in the land down under.
Cheers

Luckily, you don't have bears there. But, you do have other dangerous critters there. Here, and also there, they are not all over the place. Just in specific locations, which does make things easier to know what needs to be watched for.

It happens, infrequently, but it happens. The guy who was killed last week in Yellowstone National Park was a veteran Yellowstone hiker. He probably rounded a blind curve and came face to face with a mama protecting her cubs.

I saw a documentary a few months ago, about a girl who wanted a final hike (graduation present) with her Dad before going off to college.

The Daughter got ahead of the Father. Then she rounded a blind curve and came face to face with a mama and a cub.

I don't recall exactly what happened, in what order, but, the Father and daughter both threw themselves off of separate cliffs and were fortunate that other hikers came by in time to get help.

Both survived...

Well, 44 is at the muffler shop today! I know because the exhaust tech called, all in a tither...

Me'an daBoise had just laid down, for our mid-morning nap, when my phone rang. I answered and the tech started throwing out terms like, "problem, v-band too close to oil pan", "I need to cut the skid plate" and "I need you to come to the shop".

When I got to the exhaust shop, he showed me the v-band was, in fact, too close to the oil pan. Rather than the indignant Danny, the logical, understanding Danny presented with, "how do we fix this". He suggested we drop the tri-pipe, cut the v-band flange, weld an 8" extension and a new flange, then reinstall the tri-pipe. Note: on multiple occasions, the guy that runs the exhaust shop told me that "we don't work in cars. We don't drop headers".

I called the auto shop and asked if they wanted me to drop the tri-pipe and he said, "no, we still have work to do, I'll have the exhaust shop do it". I handed the phone to the tech and he got his marching orders and all was good, for a moment...

THen I asked what the problem was with running the exhaust above the skid plate... The tech said, "I can't make a requisite bend above the skid, plate for two pipes". I asked why there were two pipes... Why not use the collector on the passenger floorboard? He grabbed a ladder and climbed up and came down with the collector. No one told him it was there.

So, I told him I wanted the exhaust run exactly like the old exhaust, keeping the heat shield between the pipe and the BOSS air bag and keeping the other heat shield between the pipe and the aux tank. And that I want a quiet muffler.

I asked if he wanted me to stay there and he said, he wouldn't need me again.

The exhaust world returned to its axis and smiles were shared all around. :) I paid for the work and left, hoping I never need to discuss this again... Four times is enough.

So, 44 should go back to the auto shop tomorrow, for their final tweaks, tests, etc. - they haven't been able to drive it yet (other than to the exhaust shop)... I may get it back next week

Don't you love it when you have to do all the thinking work for people when they charge you to have the work done by them.

Danny, you get my vote for BEST THREAD EVER. Thanks for including us in your adventures, both mechanical and personal. I have 2 1978 FJ40's, one a rock crawler and the other a "garage queen" with 67,000 miles on it's 2nd set of H78 15 tires. I wish you the best, and if I ever get the time, I'll join you in providing readers with some fun and information on these amazing vehichles we call family. Kevin

Yep!!

But, in all fairness, I had spoken, in person, with the guy who runs the shop (owner's son), on three separate occasions. He spoke his language and I spoke mine, unfortunately they were not the same... In 43 years of software development, as an associate, as well as a contractor, I never encountered a situation as frustrating as trying to converse with the shop manager, at this exhaust shop. :bang:

So, this tech had probably been told to prepare himself to work this out with the blithering idiot who owns the truck...

Well, surprise!! My good guy (BTW for you Calif guys,I wrote point-of-sale and credit application/authorization software for the good guys, for nine years) personality bubbled to the front and it all worked out... Probably because this tech knew how to speak exhaust on a level that even I could understand. ;)

I think he was nervous, at first, that I would raise hell they had put the v-band in the wrong place. Once he saw that even I could understand the problem, it all worked out. I'm sure it cost a little more, but I have no where else to put all my money...

He knew what needed to be done, but was worried how I would respond.

It's all good!!

but I have no where else to put all my money...

Given the fact that I am in the middle of a full frame off rebuild, I am excited to announce that I am now accepting donations!!!

Wow Kevin, thank you!! Now, what is it you want? ;)

I am not doing a real build, like many of the others, so I'm happy to share my adventures, with daBoise (Gunner and Chester), in a tech thread. I doubt it's kosher, but I try to throw in tech, when I can. Just haven't had 44 for a few months, so haven't had much tech.

I'm hoping to get going again soon!!

Show us some pics of your 40s!!

Thanks again!!

Did you see that Miss something that has been found out?

She said she had cancer of some kind, accepted all sorts of donations, accepted rides to chemo, got out, went in (leaving her driver in a lobby), went out the other door. Came back in hours later, met up with her driver, returned home.

They have demanded her crown back... I don't know about the money part...

Maybe you are better off funding your own... Don't wanna cause you trouble!!

On another note... The Navajo Nation is really worried about what the Animas River fiasco is going to mean for their future generations... They are a river people... Much of their food is raised by the river...

Miss Pennsylvania if I remember correctly, and I just read that Silverton told the EPA not to test a few months ago, sounds like they were worried about getting the "superfund" label.

Yeah, superfund designation takes all control away from the locals and places it under the auspices of the EPA... Who better to,clean up,their contractors' mess...

But, the only reference to the Navajos that I've seen came from the Navajos, themselves... I'd like to see some authority actually address the Navajos...

Now that is some beautiful scenery!

Thanks Gary!! We love it up there!!

One year, Dianna and I spent just over three weeks up there... Thru Labor Day. Sept 1st the Cowboys drive quite a lot if cattle down to 9500', from the higher pastures.

I parked my muddy black Tundra and fished for several hours. When I got back to my truck, it had mud smeared all over it and was surrounded by a whole lotta young steers.

About the time I gotbback to the campground, I realized my passenger side mirror was folded in. I assumed one of the steers had pushed the mirror against the side of the truck.

When I got to the campsite, Dianna saud,"what happened to your truck?".

I got out and walked around and found the steers had fought themselves in my shiny, muddy truck and gad collapsed the passenger side of the bed of my truck.

State Farm paid... I thought I would have to bring an old bull in for a deposition.

While researching what vents/breathers need to be raised, in anticipation of water fording, I learned that my distributor venting setup is missing a required VCV.

I contacted beno (on vacation) and ordered the VCV ... Should be here around the end of August

The best information that I can find on how to properly vent the distributor is @Output Shaft 's excellent documentation, in post#12 of this post, offered up by @1911 .
