Woke up to a guy ringing my doorbell at 6:00am, and it was a guy I had seen before walking his dogs early in the morning on our street, so I opened the door and he proceeded to tell me that my LC was on our neighbors front lawn along with another SUV that had hit it. The driver just bailed and left it! We heard the noise at around 11pm but we were already in bed then and I was asleep. Wife woke up and thought it was just a transformer exploding, because that happens a lot in the neighborhood, so we didn't go out to investigate. I was the one who called the cops, and I'm super surprised NO ONE else called it in.... i mean, 11pm isnt that late.

Anyway, we're in the very early stages of the insurance claim, and there might not be coverage on the Pathfinder, which is fine, because I have uninsured motorist coverage.

The damage doesn't look terrible on the surface but it would be a lot of work to get things fixed. I'm pretty sure it will be totaled, so I'm already researching independent appraisers for when my insurance company wants to give me $1000 for this truck, but who knows what they'll come back with.

The whole rear quarter is pretty bad. As you can see there's a substantial outward dent, tailgate is done for, and in the last image I'm trying to show that the inside floor has been pushed in. Frame is bent too, so while the truck isn't 100% trash, it might not be worth saving.

What say you, mudders? Is this worth fixing at all if by some insane chance they don't total it? I was about to pull this thing in the garage TOMORROW to finally put in a new fuel tank, all fuel lines, shocks and all suspension bushings. Those are the last things it needed mechanically, then it would be onto interior and body/paint.

Has this happened to any of you before and what was the outcome with the insurance, any advice?

I do not think there is any question the insurance company will be totaling it. Saving it with a salvaged title will be up to you. It will never be worth as much with a salvaged title.

start digging up comps, your receipts... I would give them receipts for items you haven't installed yet too...the tank and suspension in your garage.

bummer, that driver was going fast when he hit your rig.

police report, lots of pictures, and as stated above good comps as to what has been sold recently not listed but sold.
just from the pics above, value looks in atleast in the low to mid teens.

Glad no one was in it when that happened. The pathfinder was really moving when the hit occured.

I would wring every dollar out of the insurance company possible; get your own comps, dig up receipts, etc.

Use that $ to buy yours back + a replacement, then part yours out. Once the frame is bent it's time to move on.

The front 3/4 of the truck has a lot of good parts on it.

My $.02.

Try to get as much money as you can without it getting totaled and go have real fun on the trails.

I believe @gman has experience with insurance company wrangling.

It's so maddening seeing something like this - If it's any consolation, in Los Angeles it's a daily occurance. Fully 50% of all accidents here are hit and run and the f'ing City/State doesn't care cuz it wouldn't be PC if they did.

Hey, at least you know your parking brakes were working!

If they total the vehicle (most likely) buy it back (and be aware that price is negotiable too), even if you end up parting it out. But it it were mine, I would have it checked and straightened by a GOOD REPUTABLE frame alignment shop and replace the rear gate and bumper and drive it.

I would also do my best to identify and locate the driver of that pathfinder and small claims him for any money lost to deductibles, rentals, etc.

What does Law Enforcement say?

I've started a claim with Allstate, the Pathfinder's insurance. Things sound good so far.

Cops ran the plates that were on the Pathfinder and gave me some incorrect info initially based on the plate number. I called the original insurance company they said it was under, and they said the vehicle wasn't on that policy. Turned out the plates had been swapped. They were able to track down the actual owner and policy number a few hours later so I called them, and the ball is rolling with Allstate. they have an adjuster coming out next week. Need to fax them my title then wait for the inspection to happen. In the mean time, I'll be collecting sold comps in the event I have to counter what the insurance wants to give me. I had a local cruiser guy stop in a little while ago and he said I should go for $14,000 which seems high to me but I'm gonna go for it anyway. He also recommended buying it back afterwards and parting it out.

Don’t limit yourself to sold comps....listings help to this isn’t real estate it’s replacement value. I’ve gone down this road before luckly my isurance company was very easy to work with and only took a couple calls and a couple of listings to get what I wanted for my totaled vehicle.

I wouldn’t part it out. I’d put on a new lower tailgate a beefy bumper and keep on trucking.

I wish it was that easy. It would be 100% fine for a trail rig, but I was planning on restoring it, redoing the interior, etc., and daily driving it. I don't have the space, time or money to have a trail toy unfortunately. I might just try to buy another one, maybe a 62 in better shape this time.

I looked at the pix more closely and it really does not look all that bad. Rear tail lid doesn't look damaged. Rear quarter glass on both sides is intact. Roof not buckled.

Do the rear doors open and close smoothly?

Good point. I can't buy a sold truck!

I’d see what the insurance will offer and what the buy back is. Sounds like you’ve done a lot of mechanical work to it. Considering the truck has rust in the lower rear quarter anyway, this might be a good chance to get a bunch of metal replaced and the truck painted on some drunk fools dime.

If you want to restore it for yourself, I’d not be too concerned if the title is salvage or not.

Yeah that's the kicker - I've done a bunch to it, know what it still needs, and just generally know its quirks. Even if I just let this one go and get another 60, I'd be starting mostly from scratch again.

Everything is riding on the insurance payout now and what I'd be able to buy it back for.

Sorry for your bad luck, loss of the plans for your cruiser and the resulting PIA of the bureaucratic hassle to follow.
Good Luck!

Although bent frames arent ideal, the repaired end result may be better than starting over. It doesn't look like a lot of damage but it all depends on your tolerance and preferences.

best advise in a nutshell:

The insurance company is not on your side.

Expect them to come at you very low. They have no reason to satisfy you. read my post on CCC1 in the thread.

get them to pay for the rental truck ...don't wait. Even if you don't need one just get one. This affects them financially and gets the clock ticking for them to resolve this.

Don't be in a hurry. You don't have to accept their first offer. If it seems way low then tell them. Ask for another valuation. If you're not getting anywhere with the "claims guy" ask for and deal with a claims supervisor. Explain to him that this is a classic vehicle and valuations are based on condition and not mileage.

I would go with NADA classic car guide value and just looking at yours, go with average retail value. They don't care about your add ons, lift kits, 5 speed or whatever else.

Lawyers won't want to get involved for the (small) money you're fighting over. You don't want to take them on and have them bleed 200.00/hr out of you and drag things on. Also you don't want to take them on with a contingency of winning and taking 1/3 of your winnings.
