Seems the clutch situation is junk. It wont disengage and is making bad noises, throwout bearing. I got some lousy pictures. It's got a Chevy bellhousing, flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, fork and throwout bearing and hub. Then it uses a oem slave cylinder mounted on a decent bracket. There's an adapter plate between that stuff and the transmission.

It appears the snout of the transmission is sheared right near the front of the trans. The throwout bearing and its hub seem to be sloppy and rubbing against the input shaft. Also, the 3 finger style pressure plate appears broke or way out of adjustment. One finger is about 1/2 inch from the hub.

Bottom line......the trans and transfer need to be removed.........

Looking at your pics your setup looks similar to @Downey 's, with the a gm b/h and plate, but it might be earlier. The b/h is an earlier version, w/the open bottom. It seems you have a gm fork and the long t/o bearing. That might be your problem.
When I 1st did an sbc to a stk 4 speed, back in the 80's, AA had me use the 40 clutch fork, hub and throw out bearing. This was a longtime ago. I recall using a 3 finger pp and the early t/o bearing, i think. Later I put the same set up together for a friend except used a chev low profile diaphragm pp and the later 40 t/o bearing. The face of the t/o bearing is different, I think. AA's bellhousing is a 1 piece cast housing fyi. Currently, I run a sbc/sm420, a similar gm b/h as yours and fork, obviously without the plate. The low profile pp and long t/o are for a 1967 truck with the 420. I still run 40 hydraulics. You might search, there's a lot of info on the subject. You might ref Downey.

Thanks for the info. Everything needs to be removed and figure out what I need. This will probably be back burner for awhile as I am tired of working on this 40.

Happy New Year everybody. The first Cruiser thing I did this year was buy a 1984 2F engine.
I don't really need it, but it was too good to pass up. So, I drove to Prescott Valley this morning and picked it up.
It could be a back up plan if the Chevy motor ends up being junk. For now, it joins my other engines hanging out in the backyard.
