Got things cleaned up a bit, took the hubs/rotors apart and took the time to run the hubs through the sandblaster to get rid of a bunch of built up crud. Just hit them with a good coat of flat black, installed fresh bearings/races, new rotors and ready to finish up.

One thing I had to address are the manual hubs I'm planning for this build. Fortunately, I had a set off my FJ45 that I won't be using in that build, so the were meant to be for the 80. They were a bit beat, rock rashed enough to have wiped off some of the lettering. Glad I have the blast cabinet and powedercoat set-up, took the time to get them cleaned up.

There was so much corrosion and rash, I had to spend some time with a variety of grinding stones, wire wheels, and sanding drums to get them looking reasonable. Enough BS, here are the pics...

Tomorrow, I'll give them a good lube and put them back together. Should be the last piece of the front axle, then it's on to the rear...

I'm taking this on, being the club guinea pig. I've got a list of many of our club 80 owners who want to drive it after its a 2wd 80 to see how it changes the driving characteristics.

I've got all the parts, just want to get both the axles ready to swap in before I drop the t-case to install the Marlin gears and do the conversion. No kit, just following Onur's thread and doing it myself.

You know I'll take pics and document it, not as good as Onur did in his conversion thread but I'll share my trials and tribulations through the process...:beer:

After driving Logan's around for a while I can honestly say that it drives better with 2wd. It makes the front end and steering feel lighter and mor car like than truck like.
 
There is a familiar name from the "Blue Room". Have not been around there much. I am pretty much a newb here. Good to see your 80 build thread!
 
Uhm, did you take a close look at the second "E" in "FREE" on your hub? It looks a little blurry compared to the other "E". :D

Must be a flaw in the original manufacturing, not like anyone would use a silver Sharpie to try and fill in the rock rash removed letters...:rolleyes:

I've been away from the project for the past few days, had to take the wife on a quick getaway for her b-day. Before I left, I think I'm stupid or something.

When I went to install the snap rings for the hubs, I couldn't get the axle pulled out far enough to get to the new grooves I had cut into the Longfields. I screwed a bolt into the end and pulled by hand but couldn't get it to release enough to show the groove...

Do I need to apply more force than just pulling on the axle by hand? I can feel it pull out then stop but I haven't really put any leverage behind it.

I don't have a lot of experience with manual hubs, it all seems pretty straight forward but sometimes its good to check with those who know more than myself...:idea:

I do not have much experience with manual hubs...but to me it seems safe to apply a bit of leverage to the service bolt, because the only limit to outward travel should be the interface between the birfield's outer face and the spindle bushing's bronze inner face--this seems rather impervious to damage the way I have it pictured in my mind?
 
thread a bolt into the birf and pull it out that way... if you got the groove cut at the right part it should clear easily.
 
An unexpected update and modification opportunity arose the other day as I went through in a thread I started in our club section...

I've picked up a steel OEM radiator that is 9 mo old (from a poor sole whose motor consumed mass quantities of oil), thermo/gasket/hoses/clamps/PCV/belts/idler pulleys and fan clutch, all OEM. Nothing fun to show there but thought I'd share doing the "blue fan clutch upgrade".

Getting a new OEM fan clutch, why not take the time to do the upgrade before throwing it in. Thanks to Landtank's detailed thread, very simple and easy to do. I found some 15k CST fluid at the local hobby shop (50 ml for $3.99), would have done 20k but the tool told me he had it on the phone, someone else must have come and bought him out before I could get there...:rolleyes:

Unfortunately, I've had some home owner tasks that have superceded this project. Should be able to get back at it this weekend...

I've acquired another t-case so I can do the work without disabling the rig. I'm hoping to get the rear axle finished and the t-case converted so I can beg friends to come by for a drive-train swap.

Hope to have an update soon...
 
It has been a while. Any updates Jerry? I am interested in the "windows" modification. What does that do for the fan clutch? I am looking at upgrading mine before the NC heat rolls in.

BTW, I am in Holly Springs, about 3 minutes away from Eric (fourtrax).

Yes, it has been a while. Other projects had taken priority, but, it's back on top of the project list.

I'm finally installing everything after doing the PM on the oil pump cover gasket and crank pulley seal. I'm trying to get it back together so we can drive it down to this weekend's ONSC event, our annual Meet & Greet weekend.

I've put some XZL's 9.00r16 and painted the wheels while I was at it, they were very corroded...

Re-FJ45, since the power plant has changed, I need to marry it to the H55 and put it in the frame to see where it all lines up.

In other words, back to the beginning.

Finally got the 80 back together and out for a drive on the XZL's. Starting @32psi for road driving and see how rough they are but 1st 5 miles on them not bad, better than my old swampers. Just used air soft pellets for balancing again, took it up to 65 w/o any vibes or shakes... :beer:

Gotta love the short bus bumper. I miss the old project days bad, trying to think of some new projects I can start on. Got a lead on something pretty unique but the gentleman travels often and is hard to catch while he's in the states. How does the truck drive with part time kit and gearing?
