Been wanting to start a build thread and just now making the time.

First a little history. Sold my most recent FJ40 back in 2014 and have missed it ever since. FJ40's have gone up and up in price over the years and I just wasn't sure I would be able to afford another one. Lost my Mom to a heart attack back in March of 2018 and life went into neutral for a couple months. Found out my Mom left my sister and I both a little money and I knew she would want me to be smart with it but also enjoy it. Started looking for another FJ40 that was fairly original but also affordable and with a lot of potential. After months of looking, saw this green 1975 and the wife and I went to go see it. Was told it was used to plow snow on the owners property. I liked all the positives and could live with and deal with the negatives. The license plates had not been renewed since 1998 so it had been sitting or driven only on private property for the last 20 years. Made a deal and gave a deposit that day, then my son and I went back with a dolly and paid for/picked it up a couple days later on March 12, 2019. On the way home from the initial drive and handshake, the wife said we had to name it. We threw around a few names and wanted to find something that was an homage to my Mom. We finally decided on Mr Grinch. That was one of my Mom's favorite movies and it also went along with the Rustic Green paint. She would be smiling.

Some pics from the day we brought him home.

My Son just turned 18 prior to getting the FJ40 and was excited to work on this Cruiser together as a project we could enjoy over time. We got the brakes adjusted and safe so that we could drive it around town this summer. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago and we spent most of the afternoon removing all the doors and the hard top. We folded down the windshield and took it for a spin to get slurpies and cool down. Once we hit about 45mph, there was 20 year old dirt and dust flying everywhere. When we got home, my kid told me he had a great day and it was so much fun driving the Cruiser with no top. That was worth the price of admission right there:). Was also the first time in all the F40's Ive owned that I drove one with the windshield folded down.

The FJ40 had obviously not had a proper bath with soap in a while and probably never been waxed. I told the wife, a little clean up would make a world of difference. As you can see in the pics, there is a lot of oxidation. Last weekend, I was reading through the thread on patina and trying to decide what to do. The wife helped me vacuum out 45 years of dirt out of the inside and helped me wash the exterior. Was cleaner but still needed more. I was throwing around the idea of boiled linseed oil and other options when I decided to break my old Matco high speed buffer. I figured I would go over a quarter panel and see what happened. Well 4 hours later, I was in awe at the progress. Called the wife to the garage and she couldn't believe it was the same truck. The high speed buffer removed all the oxidation and actually brought a solid shine to what was previously a chalky, flat mess. In the after pics below you can actually see a reflection in the paint of the expansion joints in the garage floor. Very, very happy with the results and this will be fine for a couple years until we can repaint it.

Thanks for the comments guys, we are really enjoying it.

If/when it gets repainted, it will be the OEM color and the vintage 70's stripes will be replicated. There is some nasty rot in the rear sill and back corners of the quarters that we are going to have to cut out and replace. Not sure how I would blend in the old/new paint to look right so I had assumed we would paint it all. I'm certainly open to other suggestions.

I was as surprised as anyone with the way the paint turned out after buffing/waxing. Who knew there was a shiny future for 45yr old neglected factory paint. 4hrs with a buffer and a bottle of cleaner/wax made all the difference on the exterior.

Beautiful 40. I remember seeing that one for sale and it was all I could do not to buy it. Has really great character.
I watched it on CL for a week as well. I was originally holding out for a 79+ but I couldn't be happier that we went with this one.
