Motor mounts. Should I keep buying, or just slap a chain on it?

Don't chain the mount itself. There's a better way.

Use a turnbuckle and chain together (on some rigs you can use just a turnbuckle). Attach on end to the frame and the other end to the engine itself. As high up as practical. On the driver's side of course. Sometimes a turnbuckle with a hook on one or both ends works best. Tighten the turnbuckle up. You're done. The engine is solidly preloaded by the turnbuckle and the mount can not be over stressed or broken.

We used to do it routinely with 400-500 horsepower street/bracket racers back in the day. Any increase in engine vibrations transmitted to the frame is un-noticable.

Of course!
fight torque with leverage

I'll look for a place on the engine.

Actually, with all the smog gear, auxillary battery, shower, etc., I'll have to look for the engine itself.

I just bought one for my BJ, wonder if they are the same for the 2f engine, cause mine cost 125$ at the dealer!!!! CDN $

eleblanc, any pictures you can post of the new mount? I'm curious about the 3B mount...

I'm shy to welding my frame, but I think the turnbuckle idea may work. Anyone know of a good place on the DS of the engine to hook up to?

That wasn't a easy job to do laying on the garage floor. That top bolt is really in a tight spot under the fuel pump. I had to go buy a short rachet key 11/16" since i couldn't find 17mm. Then figure a way to bend my forearm at two places to get the key on the bolt and pry that thing loose...i hope it is going to last.

I don't have picture of the new one but here is the old one

Just last night I was wraping my motor mount in some gonzo steel cable for the next offroad trip this weekend.

I now have another DD lined up so as soon as i get a chance i can pull the motor mount out of my 62 and see about finding something beefier to put back in its place.

Has any body done something like this? It seems a way better solution.

Stolen off the net, not my pictures.

Its doable, the big thing is there is such little space right there. I dont think you could come straight off the block with a piece of tube because the alternator is right there. When i pull my motor down ill see if i can integrate a tube and that style mount into the stock bracket so that it will still clear everything.

yea it would be a bitch in a 62

I checked the 440 mount scenario, it didn't seem like an easy job, I won't say impossible, just not at all easy.

Many years ago when I did an SOA on a stock 60 I went thru 2 or 3 mounts. the last one I installed, I cut the studs, drilled it & thru bolted it with a 1/2" bolt. wheeled the hell out of it without a single problem & there was no added vibration. Unless you knew exactly what you were looking at you could not tell it wasn't stock. in my opinion it was much better than chain.

simple solution keep that in mind:D

I like that idea....broke mine last trip out and had to use the winch cable to hold it down so it would stop hittin the fan shroud

Ran a bolt thru my motor mount. Worked like a charm last weekend in the rocks. The trip before that wheeling the same trails I broke a tranny and motor mount and overheated beacuse my drivetrain slide over and stopped my fan from spinning. Talk about hitting the trail hard and having it hit back.

When I put the toybox in the next month or two I am going to run solid bolts thru the tranny mount as well.

I used the p/u mount on my Crawler box it has a safty bolt of sorts in it

Al, can you get a pic of how you bolted the mm? For some reason I'm not seeing how to do it without the bolt transfering the vibration to the truck. I've broken two motor mounts, and I'm waiting on a replacement tranny mount now. I need to get this right while it's out.

I dont have a pic, but if I did it would just look like a stock mount. I Just drilled right through it. Slid it in place and dropped the bolt in. If you tighten it down to far you will get vibs but all you have to do is snug it up. I did it again on another rig and got fancy and added rubber washers between the nut and the MM it made it able to really get it snug with out vibs...

Mine is welded solid and it doesnt vibrate the truck to death, i doubt you would have any issues with a through bolt.
