Did you check that split gear issue where the exhaust cam gear is in two pieces and can have a problem with the connection between the two pieces causing a noise?

Yes, I somewhat did. Maybe I need to go back and read that thread again. My understanding is that the split gears were not lined up correctly.....mine look to line up the way they should.

I was also told to check valve clearance, I'm just to busy right now to tear into it, and have just been driving it

Well....on a hunch I pulled the oil pan and discovered what you see in these pictures. The peanut butter I think is due to driving very short trips to and from work in the winter. Especially in the extreme cold we've had the past month. Oil looked fine otherwise.

Is this the remains of connecting rod bearing(s)?

That does not look good. I suspect some bad bearings.

Did you send out an oil sample for analysis?

I have not...but I have the oil still.

Before I pull the upper pan, I'll pull the plugs and push on the pistons with a long screwdriver or something and see if I find play in any of them. If I do....upper pan will come off and I'll see if the crank is damaged. I can't imagine it won't be. Then it'll be game over.

It doesn't look like bearing debris to me. I think if a bearing were that badly damaged there'd be a loud rod knock when it was running. I think it's something else, but it's likely the cause of your noise. I believe I have read somewhere on this forum that there is a bushing on the front of the engine, perhaps related to the oil pump. I'm not sure, but I think I've read that it's not available and has to be machined to be replaced. Perhaps it is that bushing?

I'm going to try to determine if there is any play in the pistons before I go any further. Going to try the screwdriver end through the spark plug hole.

I have also read about that bushing that's not available....if it were this...would explain where I was hearing the noise through the stethoscope.

Maybe it's the bearings in the nose of the Supercharger pulley that went bad? :)

JUST KIDDING, FOLKS.....

Tim, you're braver than I am. I want to watch the live video feed when you jack the motor up off the mounts to pull the upper oil pan. :)

Neighbor made a good point....with 215k miles what's sitting in the bottom of the oil pan is probably normal.

I actually almost got the video running last night. Who wants the URL? Might be entertaining watching a poor mechanic like myself fumble around.

I'd watch. I will be checking all I can on the engine out of the 80 before it goes into the LX. I will be doing the work since I'm cheap and like to take things apart just to put them back together. This thread is pretty informative so keep up the good work.

Still working on this folks....the pace has just slowed down. Some other projects needed my attention. Especially the one I need to drive now that the LC is out of commission.

Next up Is getting the garage and all the pieces I have pulled off so far organized before I proceed. Wish it were warmer... I could get double the work done.

Any mud members near Marquette MI that want to help out?

Waiting for warmer weather. -0 here again this week. Struggling now with raising the motor. Whole truck lifted when trying to raise the motor. Going to have to cut the sip stick tube as well. Bolt is impossible.

It will drive again....just a matter of time.

Back in the garage folks.....finally got the upper oil pan removed last night. Pulled the cap on just one rod bearing....it looked decent. Going to check for play on all pistons before I pull anything else. Likely will be starting to pull the timing cover tonight. Pretty sure this will reveal my problem area.

Not much of a mechanic, but what the hell. I can't make it any worse and this is a good learning experience. Will be something I this motor runs right again.

I have what I think is the same issue on my new to me 226k Cruiser. Did you ever find the root of the noise?
