Hi

I am new here and this is my v. first post.

I have land cruiser J81. It has 1HD 4.2L Turbo Diesel Engine I6 version. Its my first ever diesel vehicle.

Fuel tank capacity is 80~90L. (I usually top up when gauge needle touch below point and usually it takes 65~70L to top up).

Some people say its OK to mix 1L of Engine oil with ~70L Diesel. Its good for injector nozzles & keep fuel pump lubricated as well. It may produce a very minor smoke, but engine pick up will be superb. (Frankly, I have tried once and yes it works).

But some people say its not good to mix Engine oil with Diesel. If lubrication is the concern then only 2T oil should be added with 70:1 ratio.

And some people say its absolutely not necessary to mix anything with Diesel if you are having good quality fuels.

Just wondering what are your experiences about it ?

I don't have direct experience with the 1HD, but I'll offer what I know.

I have a military diesel pickup with a N/A 6.2 V8, and I've been adding about 5Q per 20G of filtered used motor oil to it for three years +/- with no ill results. I filter the oil with a brass reusable coffee filter. Bear in mind that I only drive this truck 600 miles a year, and there's anecdotal evidence that the military motors are rated to run on blended fuels.

However, with that disclaimer out of the way, I agree that the motor generally runs better with a bit of used oil in there. I'll continue to run used oil in this truck without hesitation.

Racing diesel trucks is real popular where I am from. I know a lot of the guys will put a quart of atf into their gas tank every 2 or 3 tanks. Supposedly it helps keep them running clean and is supposed to be good for the iniectors.

Non synthetic ATF and 2-stroke oil are used by many for lubrication.

They’ll run on a really heavy mix of oil if you felt inclined. I usually mix in just a couple gallons at a time if I feel inclined but I have dumped a 5 gal bucket into my cummins here and there. Itd run more though.

I’ve primed fuel filters that hold over a quart - to fuel filters the size of a half a soda can with straight 10wt and straight ATF many many times on both mechanical and heui cat, paccar, cummins, deutz, perkins, international, detroit etc... yes I realize you shouldn’t prime fuel filters but in the real world sometimes you have to make s*** happen. Point is, they’ll start and run on almost entirely oil. I would not do this on a common rail though.

Let me just add as an afterthought, I’m not talking about waste oil, thats a whole different subject.

I occasionally stumble across new clean oil that no longer has use for anyone and into the tank it goes. For instance I have a 55 gal drum of mobil atf that is slowly getting cut into my fuel tank. Or I’ve put a gal of vegetable oil, hydraulic oils of various sorts, weird weight engine oils etc... you could run probably 50/50 in the summer but if we’re talking about adding some to aid in lubricity or because you came across some clean oil theres no other use for... 5 gals into a tank is nothing... and a couple quarts is next to nothing.

I like to add a little extra lube but mostly if its free and it burns, in it goes!

I used to run all of the waste engine oil from my Cummins through the fuel system.. Easiest way to dispose of it.....

With all the speculation and indecisiveness on here, what is the conclusion? Oil or not? I am curious about this as well.

Do whatever you want, but basically when EPA mandated LSD and then ULSD, the fuel lost lubricity. The mechanical injection systems are pretty robust but...

Conclusion is, adding oil into the fuel is not going to hurt, and will definitely help lube the pumps and injectors. Clean oil, not waste oil. Waste oil needs to be heated up and filtered intensely.

Does adding oil to the fuel make more black smoke when you throttle it hard and Blow Coal?

Diesel can probably run on grandmas biscuit gravy.

EPA digs it? Not likely

F the EPA lol, they are shutting down anywase.:clap:

Large fleet of Semi Tractors near me (moved) (Butternut Bread Bakery) used to have a filter on inlet to their fuel storage tank they dumped all their changed oil through and ran it through the engines for years and I'd suspect they did at other plants too. Told me it was never a problem.

Be careful, putting AFT will give you a offraod fuel red filter and you can get in a fight about your red filter :eek:

Well. I believe mixing a small amount of “Clean Oil” into fuel tank would be good.

So now on I will be adding Half Liter Engine oil into the fuel tank with every fill up.

Now, the engine oil should be Mineral (like 10w-40 or 20w-50 or 40 straight weight, etc. ) or synthetic one will be good as well like 0w-20, 5w-30 etc. ?

Will appreciate your input about it …

How much does it cost to change fuel filters? Just curious, as everyone here seems to want to dump a bunch of crap into their fuel tank.......

What do you imagine is being added that would affect the life of the filters?

As far as cost, ehhh 15$ maybe.

I suppose straight mineral oil would probably be the best choice. Obviously 2 stroke oil is commonly used, might be a good choice in spite of the article above.

I’ve honeslty never purchased oil for this purpose, I just burn stuff because its free and it burns.
