thansk for your reply, i am a bit green regarding these buses:oso if i understand that correctly, it should be a simple case of remove the whole drum to drum 75 jf40 including the attached steering links... and replace the whole asembly from the 84 fj45, and it should be a simple bolt up procedure??

I'm glad this thread was bumped up.

I've read the whole thread several times in preparation of a disc conversion, and although I may have missed it I didn't see any discussion of centering the axle shaft. Is this even something I should even worry about if I keep the upper and lower shims in their original orientation? FWIW I will be using one of Marlin's axle seals, which I understand are a little more forgiving in this regard.

Kurt, are you certain about this? I was hoping that late 40's and 60's had the same thread, such that you could use a late 40 tie rod after converting a 40 front end to 60 knuckles?

Couldn't you just use a mini truck tie rod and TREs, and use a starter bushing or one of the fancy tapered inserts to tie the relay rod into the PS TRE?

That's what I and several others have done. works good... imho...

I considered this same question when doing my conversion. I used the Marlin heavy duty inner axle seals but still decided to go ahead and use the SST to get the shim measurements. Fortunately, one of the guys locally had the SST tool that I could borrow.

In my thinking I felt it was risky to use the shims from my original knuckles (original orientation) and just as risky to use the shims from my doner knuckles - as neither of these "reuse shim configurations" were measured to work with my original axle and doner knuckles.

In my case, it was the right thing to do as the shims I needed were different from either of the two "reuse shim configurations" options that were available.

good to know i was always curious if one set might work either from the original axle housing knuckle combo or from the donor knuckle axle housing combo
neither set was correct. :grinpimp:

currently in the process of doing a conversion from drums ( fj40 1975) to disc ( complete 60 series knuckles, calipers, rotors, , with fj55 30 spline axels/birfs and aisin hubs.

the problem i have run into is once i put have placed the aisin hub cover, and then the outer c clip onto the axel, i go to install outer hub cover and spring, and it wont fit!! it seems as though the axel is to long by around 3-4 millimeters.

after reading this thread a couple of more times... it seems as though the clip for the axel can be a tight fit?? again, i can install it easily..no need to pull axel out, and have around 5 mill bhind the clip before any of the other hub internals.. i have tapped/lightly hit the axel end to try and move it further into the diff housing...no go....

anybody got ideas?? pulling my hair out atm!!!

thanks in advance
Luke

Great stuff

Love the thread, I am going to be doing an SOA with my FJ40 here soon and I have an axle from a mini truck to use the knuckles off of. I was going to do that and then use a highsteer kit, but I have a couple of questions for those of you with more knowledge than me about the LC's

If I wanted to could I use the mini truck knuckels and still use the drum brakes from the original axle?

Will the knuckle conversion work on a 68?

And will the rod end that comes with a high steer kit work on the steering link that is attached to the frame?

Thank you for any help.

Welcome AZ68FJ40

I am not sure if the '68 used the old ball and claw design or if you have full birfs.

Drum brakes use different birfs than minitrucks. If you want to keep the drums, why bother with minitruck knuckles? The disc upgrade is a big plus to going with the minitruck knuckles.

If you are going high-steer I would strongly recomend you investigate power steering to eliminate the center arm that mounts on the frame.

Here is a link to my power steering write-up where I take the PS off a 60 series Cruiser and put it on my 40:

Bump for a great thread!

In the process of removing my front drums for disc brakes on my 1970 FJ40.

the rare 78-earlier ASCO hubs.

Hi, am trying to diagnose a problem i am having and it seems that i have those hubs, the car in question is a 1978 BJ40 and the hubs say ASCO on them.

Seems that the whole assembly is loose/coming off so i need to tear it apart to figure out what is wrong.

What would i need to do differently on the ASCO?(not rebuilding, just tearing down to find the problem, fixing it and putting back together).

There are studs, cone washers and nuts that secure the lockout assembly to the hub.

See here for scans from the FSM:

Good luck!

How many Land Cruisers in Finland?

Thanks for that.

There are a lot of Land cruisers of various types here in Finland.

One of the things that surprised me was how many BJ40/45 there are, have no numbers over how many there are tho.

And of course there are loads of newer ones as well.

They are popular here for all kinds of bogging/trail running(in the woods) and crawling, also as hunting/recreational vehicles.

This may have been covered else where, and I don't know anything about the minitruck axles, but could you not just swap out the 40 axles for the minitruck axles? What would be the problems with this swap?
