Kurt, are you certain about this? I was hoping that late 40's and 60's had the same thread, such that you could use a late 40 tie rod after converting a 40 front end to 60 knuckles?
Couldn't you just use a mini truck tie rod and TREs, and use a starter bushing or one of the fancy tapered inserts to tie the relay rod into the PS TRE?
where would someone find these "fancy tapered inserts"?
centering the axle shaft. Is this even something I should even worry about if I keep the upper and lower shims in their original orientation?
I considered this same question when doing my conversion. I used the Marlin heavy duty inner axle seals but still decided to go ahead and use the SST to get the shim measurements. Fortunately, one of the guys locally had the SST tool that I could borrow.
In my thinking I felt it was risky to use the shims from my original knuckles (original orientation) and just as risky to use the shims from my doner knuckles - as neither of these "reuse shim configurations" were measured to work with my original axle and doner knuckles.
In my case, it was the right thing to do as the shims I needed were different from either of the two "reuse shim configurations" options that were available.

the rare 78-earlier ASCO hubs.
Hi, am trying to diagnose a problem i am having and it seems that i have those hubs, the car in question is a 1978 BJ40 and the hubs say ASCO on them.
Seems that the whole assembly is loose/coming off so i need to tear it apart to figure out what is wrong.
What would i need to do differently on the ASCO?(not rebuilding, just tearing down to find the problem, fixing it and putting back together).
