Thanks Lulo. Yes i agree the guys at 4wdtv did a great job on the video i cant wait for part 2.

Right now im just thinking about the design of it. Will have to wait till after new years to get some steel together and work on my welding in the mean time!

First week back at work for the new year and ive already got mods planned with my weeks paycheck. First thing on the list is exhaust (might ask them to supply a few lengths of 3inch pipe for a bumper aswell) then i might go for a boost controller and gauges. Can anyone reccomend what gauges to get?

On another note i have changed all the diff/transfer case/gearbox/pto box oils and also added some hefty recovery points to the front.

I have hooks at both chassis rails, crush tubes (1.5mm x25mm pipe) and HT bolts through the entire length of the rails. I dont think they will be going anywhere in a hurry. And also have my 4x4 course this sunday cant wait.

I have been collecting a few photos of bumpers i like. And cant decide what sort to go for so any input appreciated. What do you think?

This is twistys bar, never seen it on a 70series but i think it could look quite cool (and cheap if i source the pipe while getting an exhaust done)

I really like this one but how hard would it be to make!

This is a cheezy racing bar (starts from about 1100bucks)

This was the idea all along. A simple crossmember with recovery points and a simple bar across the top for lights (but not much protection)

Something a bit different

And my favourite so far (but involves an ARB bar chopped up!)

if you need weird bolts for the shorties
westrac sell all cat bolts which are grade 8.8 or stronger and in crazy lengths i did my 2'' body lift with them worked out all good

thanks mate will keep that in mind

A few updates:

Last weekend i went on my Eureka 4wd course, what can i say but what a fantastic course. I reccomend it 100% for anybody with the slightest inclining they should do one. I have been 4wding for the best part of 2years every weekend and this course was aimed at begginers and i still learnt a few things out of it. The guys Pete and Ash did a great job very professional and fun to hang around with. I will definatley be doing the sand course soon and maybe even the weekend tour.

A few photos to follow.

Finally made a video of the powerlines trip back before christmas. Let me know what you guys think. Its 4mins long but i think got some decent footage.

Going to speak to Mindarie exhaust right now hopefully i have a shiny new 3inch exhaust by the weekend.

I have a GFB boost controller sitting in my room

Just bought a VDO boost gauge from ebay should be here by monday

But before turning up the boost i think new engine oil and filters all round it has been about 2-3k since my last service. Then turn up the boost a little more than standard maybe 8-10psi but dont worry i will check stock boost level before turning it up.

If i have enough cash i will then get a pyro from VDO

and will also get it dynoed at mindarie exhaust turn up the fuel so i can get it running at about 10-12psi without being too lean and with safe EGT's.

Then its still the old list of

-shocks

-locker

-fit converter

-lengthen wheelbase

-widen track

it never ends!

Hi All:

Great video Gib! Love those 70 Series!

Alan

Hello Gib,

Very good footage.

You've got yourself a fine 71. Keep us posted please!

thanks guys appreciate your comments:)

I see that you're looking for ideas for your next bumper, and judging by the pics you posted, you like tube bumpers. Here are a few pics of the "rally type" bumpers that are very popular around here right now:

Hope that helps, that's a ver nice 70 you have there by the way ;)

Looking good Gib! I would really appreciate it if you could put up some detailed picture of your home made garden edging flares - looking to be doing something similar I reckon...
Gil
Thanks gilghana. The flares are really easy, all you have to do is measure exactly the length and the width you need and use tin snips to cut the plastic. I needed about 40mm of flare so i cut about 50mm so i could screw it into the wheelarch. Use self tapping screws every 30mm or so. I know its alot of screws but if you dont it will buckle (like mine are doing now) Then just round of the edges to how you think they should look. Here are the best photos i can find

UPDATE:

1) Got my exhaust today, 3inch mandrel bent straight through from the dump, no muffler and a shiny tip on the end :D

Have to say i was really impressed with the work Mettams midland did, the price was almost half the cost of the next nearest quote and the workmanship was spot on. The only complaint i have is the tip hangs a bit low but i think ill get rid of it anyway too much bling for my liking

Its loud, but not too loud inside the cab. Definate increase in power, before i struggled to get past 3500rpm but now it flies straight to 4000 no worries which is going to be awesome on the dunes.

Pics will follow i didnt manage to get any good ones

2) I also finally did my convertor wiring, its all neat and tidy and mounted on my drawers out of reach from any water (hopefully). Im running my UHF, 12v cigarette lighter and boost gauge (when it shows up) and also my cd player of which im still having problems with.

3) And also done a million odd jobs that needed doing like the angle iron over the space in the fan shroud, fixing oil leaks (damn forgot to replace drain plug gaskets), siliconed a leak in my snorkel and put a big caterpillar sticker on the front window :)

Photos...

Heres a shot of my front recovery points, still thinking about a front bar

And the Caterpillar sticker, i like it because its quite subtle but still big, and the yellow bit looks like one of those racing tow point stickers
