@daniel.watters
Filled up this morning after driving my first tank full. 26.4 mpg. Not too shabby. Was hoping to crack the 30 mark, close, but no cigar. Not one trip on this tank was over 15 mi. And they included 2 stop signs each trip. So once I get the black box cooling figured out I will take a longer trip. I would think it would be better going down the hwy anyway. We will see.

Any idea how long your transmission set up is? Do you think it would be too long for a stock length 40?

I am running a NV3550 and it measures about 24 in. with the black box its about 30 in. I think if you didn't put the blackbox in you could put it in a stock length 40. As I have posted I may not have put in the blackbox since all the overheating issues... I still need to put the cooler and pump in. I have it all and it is on the short list of fixes....

Hope that helps.

Any idea on mpg?

Yes. First tank was just over 26. Since then I have had the tune reworked. I like the tweaks they made to the tune. It is definitely getting better mileage. Unfortunately all my trips have been under 5 miles lately...

This is the first tank with the new tune and I haven't kept track. I will fill it soon and keep track and will post about the results.

Installed this gauge this weekend.. I felt better before I knew how hot this Black Box was getting... This was after driving 12 miles, resting 30 min. Driving 12 miles back. It cooled down a bit before I got the pic taken. It was at 255 and still climbing..

I decided to get the cooler in before I drive it anymore. Starting to tear it apart.. It will be interesting how much the temps drop. I hope to have the cooler all in by this weekend and test it out.

Cooler is in. It was a snug fit. Hopefully get the lines run tonight. The pump is mounted as well. I will try to get a pic of that tonight.

That poor radiator!

On the large grades here out west my truck needs all the airflow it can get. I've been mounting coolers up underneath to keep the air flowing through the radiator. I never have issues until high elevation high temp days like we had a month or so ago on the way up through Colorado. I have a large 29" radiator and heavy duty fan setup, but I also have a lot of it blocked by the winch and all that crap in the front of the blue truck. It keeps the temps under control, but I would be afraid to put so much directly in front of it. And slowing down is no fun when you have the TQ to pull those big grades :)

No way you can put that below with a temperature switch to run both the pump and a fan? Before you make the lines :)

Those temperatures in that box are not good, especially for such a short duration drive! I will have to inform my buddy who has one of these boxes in his 62. I have a feeling a cooler will knock that down very easily however.

Curious to see your Transfer case temps if you get around to installing the sender!

Truck looks great!

Mike

@Godfather90 Thanks Mike for the info. I was wondering how the temps out west changed things. We plan to spend a lot of time out there when its done. So setting it up now to handle the heat will help in the future. Thanks!!

The coolers underneath get enough air to cool ok?

I was nervous about the radiator taking a hit from everything... My intercooler gets my intake temps down to about 1.5-2 degrees above ambient. Even on the worst days here in MN.

I will keep you posted on drive train temps.
Thanks again.

The TDI keeps the heat out of the water until it sees high load at elevation, then it will start making heat. Out here you need the cooling capacity.

I would buy a little SPAL fan and mount it right to that cooler and put it on the underside of the truck. It can lay flat and wont matter. You're likely going to need a fan if it is mounted below. There shouldn't be too much heat flux from that little box, so a fan will knock the heat down easily. I would look for an adjustable temperature switch and set it up to kick the fan on a little over 100*C or so. Gear oil can stay pretty hot and you don't want that fan kicking on constantly like if you used a 190*F switch from an engine coolant circuit. You can use the switch to kick the pump on as well as long as you can mount the sender in the box its self so it sees the fluid even when the pump is off. You have a DD dash so you can buy their module if you want to.

The nice thing is you keep that intermediate box cool and its going to cool the gearbox and the transfer box a little bit by conduction.

What pump did you pick up?

Mike

I took the guts from a Ford Taurus 3.8 fan and built a shroud. The fan only likes to cycle between low and off, and between low and high. Not between high and off. I usually hook it up to high if the temps get above ~225. This has only happened one time actually. That was this past trip during the heat wave. was 122* in Las Vegas!

Do you have an AC condenser in there somewhere as well?

If I were to do it again i would put a 14" mechanical fan with 2 10" Spal's next to it. Divide the shroud onto two sections and kick the 2x 10" fans on with the thermal switch. That way its always got negative pressure on the rear of the radiator and the 14" mechanical fan wont be too obnoxious. Would have to make a clamshell shroud though to make it serviceable. I will wait till I have issues.

Pump looks interesting! Like to hear how it turns out.

Mike

Yes, I hid a condenser in between the intercooler and the radiator.

I like that fan idea. I will check that out. Thanks.

I liked the looks of this little pump as well. I will let you know how it works.
Thanks

Well, it does what it's supposed to do. I will plan to overhaul my cooler situation this winter to make sure it will cool when heading out west in the hotter temps. Thanks @Godfather90 for the tips!

Ambient temps were a little cool this am. Coming in at 29 degrees F.
So I was pretty easy for the cooler to keep it cool this am.

This was after the same trip I made the other day. Except I didn't stop for the half hour. I turned around and headed back. It's supposed to be 60 degrees F later today so we will see what it does with a higher ambient temp.

Thanks to @Hogan for lighting a fire under my rear with the invite!!

You're welcome can't wait to see it in person. I had a TDI until a year ago 325,000 on the clock.

@Hogan Thank you guys for having us along! It was a nice day for a cruise. beautiful scenery! We put almost 300 miles on, everything worked as it should. Even the hum of the diesel put the kids to sleep! :) Thanks again for the invite and motivation!

Thank you @White Stripe for letting me come see your rig while we were in Denver. Very nice to see it in person. Great work on it!!

We did manage to get a trip to the mountains in the sxs and 4 wheeler. Didn't bring the 40. Hopefully next time.
Here we were pretty much at tree line outside of Georgetown, Co.
