Hello! I'm new and in the middle of gathering all the missing parts (and there are a LOT) for my 03/1976 FJ40. After searching the forums, I'm uncertain whether I need an igniter. I bought it with no coil, no ballast resistor, and (apparently) no igniter. It *seems* like a critical part?

Your FJ40 came from the factory with an ignitor. It's your choice if you want to run it or switch to something else.
Dizzy FAQ - https://globalsoftware-inc.com/coolerman/fj40/dizzyfaq.htm link to my ignition data gleaned from Jim C. and others here on MUD. Here you can see what was available from Toyota by year.
There are many options for the ignition on your FJ40. You can use all Toyota stuff or run aftermarket stuff like the DUI system. Nothing beats a good set of points for easy trail repairs. I personally run the entire igniton system from a 1986 FJ60. Large cap distributor, ignitor/Coil and the dented side cover needed to allow fitment of the large cap dizzy on my 2/1971 FJ40.

My igniter set-up includes a resistor for the coil (top), and a resistor for the igniter (inboard side of coil). Plus, the heat shields on both of the resistors. I'm not sure if this is correct for my year / build date.

The Haynes Manual explains how to re-wire it so the coil can run on the distributor's points-set without the igniter. The negative coil terminal (low voltage) leads to the points-set, and the points run to the capacitor, before engine ground. You'll typically install a capacitor on the distributor breaker-plate, or on the outside of the casting. These capacitors are readily available. You'll want to service the points, more often, if you don't run the igniter with the coil.
