My daughter had an accident with the '76 due to what we beleive to be a sudden failure of the master cylinder. The truck underwent a total restoration and was put on the road again in June after replacing the master TWICE to get safe brakes (once as a rebuild kit and once as a professionally rebuilt master). As far as I know the brakes have been fine since June up until this week. The ONLY changes to the brakes during the course of the restoration was the vacuum source which on the 3B diesel is a vacuum pump on the altenator (typical 3B design which has worked fine for me for as long as I've owned my BJ60).

I was going to suggest she buy an OEM master rather than the rebuilt.

Ideas or suggestions to fix the problem?

p.s. A front fender is also needed!!!

I know everyone is OEM crazy, but I've used the $40 rebuilt ones for years with little problems. I typically rebuild before I buy rebuilt though.

A friend went to napa last week for a rebuild kit for his '71 40 master cylinder. $44. $41 for a rebuilt one.

I'm with you on the rebuild masters but having it go bad twice in such a short time raises some concerns after all brakes are important. At least with OEM it "should" be perfect.

1992-1994 V6 4x4 Toyota pickup master cylinder will bolt right up. May have to shorten the push rod a bit, but it works great. Huh, 4w disks or drums? If drums, forget this one. Also a supra master cylnder from the early 80s will work. They had 4wdisks

This is the standard '76 FJ55 brakes. Disc front and drum rear.
