fj55-100
SILVER Star
This started as a what wheel do i want , I have old school indy slot mags on it now (cause Im old). and had a set of western mag wheels on before that . and have run the walker evans beadlocks off my trail rig (86 $runner 3.4 supercharged , caged ,bla bla bla ect) . but cant seem to find a wheel that i like or that will fit the backspacing i need with disc on the front , using the 92-95 s13wb calipers left little room for a 35 inch tire . all modern wheels just dont do it for me . after looking at countless pictures of fj55s i really like the stock wheel with the hub caps ,but they are only 6 1/2 wide and wont run 35 12.50 bfg tires ,and the back spacing needs fixing . Used the search button all over the interweb and mabey 2 or 3 companys still widen wheels , when i inquired on a cost for 5 wheels it was more than i paid for my piggie . So putting 2900$ in tires and stock looking wheels is not in my budget .
So now comes the LOW TECH approach . i am not afraid of making my own parts . so ....
Step one i need 5 stock wheels for the centers and the hub cap clips .Toyota pn 42601-60072 fits the bill at 98$ cost each
Step two outer rings . Speedway sells wheel shells in a few widths for dirt track racing . so 8 inch was the magic depth to hold a 35x12.50 15 . 38$ each
Step three ,now the LOW TECH not having a gap lathe ,my lathe only will swing 12 inches . i used my brake lathe to cut out the centers to a press fit in the shells .
step four, made up a jig to center the center in the shells so i could repeat the process as many times as needed , welded together with more weld than the oem ones came with .
Spun the bare wheel on my road force tire ballencer and was pleased to see the run out was less than some cars i see in the shop everyday .
Step five (pending ) will send out to the powder coater to make a lasting finish ..
I have two left to do this to so i will fill in the missing pictures as it happens
