That's actually not a bad idea, some people were asking for DYI kit. For $300, I can offer the frame and lid cut out with hinge attached. I will have the holes cut out to fit exactly into the factory holes, it will not be counter sink, you can source your own bolts. The lid will not have the latch holes cut out, that will leave room for you guys to purchase your own latches and cut the holes to fit accordingly, you pay for shipping and handling.

How much would be for a full kit without shipping? We talking cash price and I pick it up?

Price is on par with WagonGear - so about right

Well, I'm guilty of being broke myself as I recall having the same thoughts about buying wagon gears' lid, it was an exceptionally good use of space and he did a great job with his product. But I simply couldn't afford it, later I found a thread of Kevin stating his profit margin is minimal and he was having a hard time staying afloat. I pondered why it cost so much, until I started making my own. There is a lot of work behind the scenes and hours of meticulous labor that not everyone know of or will understand, stainless steel latches and hardware also add up very quickly.

I can offer the DYI option for anyone interested, just send me a PM.

That's a good question I forgot to address, I still don't know how much it will cost to ship this thing, but I'm thinking it will run around $50??
I'm willing to minus the difference of shipping fees, $475 cash price picked up locally or at my work in downtown LA. These figures are still being tinkered with, if I find a more efficient way to make these things, I will adjust prices accordingly.

yeah I was hoping for it to be a cheaper option than the wagongear lid, price is why I have not jumped on that. I do have a flat piece of al waiting to go on my tailgate so I am going to be cheap and stick with that. Nice work though and good luck with the group buy. If you end up having more info on the diy kit I may be interested in that if it is something that is truly diy and we won't have to pay someone to tig the hinge on etc?, otherwise the savings are going to be eaten up quickly....

The hinge will be attached, you won't have to mess with it. The holes will be pre drilled to fit factory holes but not counter sink, however the nuts, bolts and latches will not be provided, the holes for the latches will not be cut out because there are so many variations in shapes and sizes. That will leave you guys the options of picking out your own bolts and latches, you then can cut the hole to fit the hardware you picked.

One side could be an ice chest and the other charcoal for a BBQ :flipoff2:

:flipoff2::flipoff2: Already have the ice chest covered there slick...and the stove. I need room to store the needless crap.

I need to think about this...

I might want a budget kit... need to think on it. My thought was to stuff the gate with spares and recovery gear I never use(thereby guaranteeing its immediate use), and closing the lid with cap screws.

While I agree it is a wasted space, the storage price per sq/in for this or Wagon Gear's lid seems pretty steep compared to a drawer system. Unless you want both drawer and extra space or a flat rear floor. Also you have to consider what your going to store in that hole and how you are going to keep it from rattling and driving you nuts, and can you get to it when you need it, i.e. can you get the gate down or not have too much s*** in front of it to get into from the interior.

Just random thoughts...

Nice looking piece though. IMHO better than WG.

@oilbrnr, you would be shocked what you can fit in the lid. I think it's a great cost to benefit in my opinion. I want drawers as well but for different reasons. Here's what is in mine...

Tailgate contents
- crowbar
- SC wrench
- spare hoses and clamps
- tire repair kit
- spare belts
- bailing wire
- gerber axe
- air chucks/tools
- ARB air gauge/chuck
- SOG shovel
- Benchmade fixed blade knife
- Jumper cables
- 1/2" breaker bar
- 3/8" torque wrench
- 4 ratchet straps
- 2 bungee cords
- air hose

I heard some crazy stories of what people put in there... some guy turned it into a living fish tank running on solar panels, another crazy guy wants to turn it into a cooler on one side and charcoal bbq grill on the other, but the craziest maniac turned into a gun store, running around town with his shot gun... Psshhh I don't think he even know how to use that thing, he probably pose and take selfies with it in the mirror.

Well I'm not one of those people that takes selfies with their guns. That's ghey. But I did take it out because it was more important to put in my torque wrench. Yes, I said it. My torque wrench is more important than my shotgun. Let the hate PMs begin :flipoff2:

No doubt that it is a big ass void, I'm just looking at ROI.

I've spent a fair amount of coin on this 80, but at that price point I kinda say there are better alternatives for future funds.

Just my opinion.

Which will probably change a year or so from now, and then you can give me s***! :flipoff2:

Just get the DYI kit and be done with it then

I agree. And if your going to DIY, you can do a nice full drawer set & have money left over for a full tank of fuel & beer.

good to know, put me down as interested in the diy kit and let me know when they are available. I already have one latch so this might work for me. Is it necessary to use 2 latches or would one suffice in the middle. The countersinking can be done easily on my drill press, already have the bit and the hardware inserts can be found easily at the nearby hardware store.

I would do two latches just to be safe, but it depends what you out in there. If your list is like NLXtacy, you might want two so it won't pop open.

Must be two. Even though the aluminum is more rigid than the plastic on the WG unit I would definitely use two latches.

They let you roll around legally with shotguns in California?
